We urgently need your support to help provide basic necessities for the women we work with in Bwindi, Uganda, who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, and are struggling to feed their families.

A gift to Ride 4 a Woman can make the world of difference to women and children in desperate need at this very critical time.

What we do

Ride 4 a Woman  started in 2009 by Evelyn Habasa and her husband Denis Rubalema. The organization exists to support local women in Bwindi, Uganda, struggling with issues associated with HIV, domestic violence and poverty.

More than 300 women are associated with the Ride 4 a Woman community center, where they can learn to pedal sew, weave baskets, dance, sing and drum, learning new skills to make an independent living to support themselves and their children. Tourists usually provide the vast majority of income for our women and their families, by purchasing the handmade souvenirs we have produced.

Impact of the COVID-19 outbreak

Due to the current coronavirus outbreak, and the subsequent travel bans, income in the area is at a complete standstill and many women are now struggling to feed their children at all. When tourism shut down completely, normally driven by gorilla trekking, every local source of income fell with it. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to a third of the world’s mountain gorillas and the community of Bwindi heavily relies on tourism to drive their economy. Porters, trekkers and guides are all out of work now, local commerce has dramatically slowed and children are now at home, adding to household costs. Families simply cannot cope. The sudden lack of income has severely limited the possibility of providing food. Many are relying on community and personally grown crops, which are not efficient ways to cater to their children’s needs. The situation is increasingly impossible for our women to support themselves and their families.

GroundUP Africa  is supporting Ride 4 a Woman, by offering nearby farming land to grow crops for sustenance and a temporary place for them to work. However, we are going to need more help.

We are urgently appealing for your help to make a difference for women who are struggling to feed their children.
