Hello! We are Mother Tongues, a 6-piece ensemble based in Glasgow. Since forming in 2024, we have been performing an eclectic mix of folk music, ranging from Argentine sambas to Swedish polskas, to Scottish reels. Whether we are arranging tunes we like, or creating original music, the sound we create always reflects our varied backgrounds and interests. Among the six of us, we play violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, mandolin and voice… as well as the occasional tambourine, piano, drum, triangle, or whatever else we can get our hands on!
We’ve been playing together for a while now and in that time we’ve created many arrangements that we love. We are making this album as a record of our time together and as a way of sharing it with others. It's another way for us to share our music and the message at the heart of it: that music can bring people together and honour their differences.
Turns out recording an album is expensive! The money we raise will be used towards the cost of two days in La Chunky recording studio; mixing and mastering by Stevie Cossar; CD manufacture; and releasing on streaming platforms.
Mother Tongues has grown into something that each of us love so much, and we can’t wait to share this album with you all, but we need a little bit of help to get there. As a token of our appreciation, everyone who donates will be listed in our CD liner notes.
If you have ever heard us play and enjoyed our music, please consider donating.
Lots of love,
Mother Tongues xx
