Hi, my name is Maricela and I work helping families and assisting students to graduate high school and getting a higher education. I have known Ms. Lucas for almost 7 years. Ms. Lucas lost her husband 13 years ago and was left in Guatemala with 6 children. At that time she knew she had to provide for her children. Ms. Lucas and her oldest daughter, who at the time was 12, started to go around their neighborhood to sell atole. Life was hard and she decided to be brave and do the move to this country for the American Dream. Ms. Lucas arrived in Fallbrook, CA in late 2016. She was able to get a job and start bringing her children here. Life was hard but she was happy, all her children, 2 nephews, and her grandson were here and she was providing for them. Ms. Lucas says she was finally feeling like everything was going to be okay, until she started to feel ill and in September 2022, she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. This was a shock, but she was ready to fight the battle. They started her on oral chemotherapy, but no changes on her tumors, they were increasing. Doctors started IV chemotherapy and then doctor finally had to let Ms. Lucas know that they were stopping chemo because she was suffering for it, but it was not working. Ms. Lucas said she cried, cried and cried, what would happen to her family, but she made peace and left in Gods hands. Ms. Lucas says if this what God has for me and I believe he will be there for my family. Ms. Lucas is now in Hospice care and when I visit her she always does her best to dress up, have a smile and never complaints. She has shared so many stories of her life and struggles, and I know that she seems or looks okay but she is worried. Hola, mi nombre es Maricela y trabajo ayudando a familias y ayudando a estudiantes a graduarse de la escuela secundaria y obtener una educación superior. Conozco a la Sra. Lucas desde hace casi 7 años. La señora Lucas perdió a su marido hace 13 años y se quedó en Guatemala con 6 hijos. En ese momento supo que tenía que mantener a sus hijos. La señora Lucas y su hija mayor, que en ese momento tenía 12 años, comenzaron a recorrer su barrio vendiendo atole. La vida era dura y decidió ser valiente y mudarse a este país por el sueño americano. Ella llegó a Fallbrook, California a finales del 2016. Pudo conseguir un trabajo y empezar a traer a sus hijos a éste país. La vida era dura pero ella era feliz, todos sus hijos, 2 sobrinos y su nieto estaban aquí y ella los mantenía. La Sra. Lucas dice que finalmente sentía que todo iba a estar bien, hasta que comenzó a sentirse enferma y en septiembre del 2022, le diagnosticaron cáncer de pulmón en etapa 4. Esto fue un shock, pero ella estaba lista para pelear la batalla. Le iniciaron quimioterapia oral, pero no hubo cambios en sus tumores, al contrario iban aumentando. Los médicos comenzaron la quimioterapia intravenosa y finalmente tuvieron que informarle a la Sra. Lucas que iban a suspender la quimioterapia porque no estaba funcionando y ella estaba sufriendo. La Señora Lucas dijo que lloró, lloró y lloró, y ahora qué pasaría con su familia, ella hizo las paces con Dios y lo dejó en sus manos. Y dice que "Si ésto es lo que Dios tiene para mí, él también estará ahí para mi familia". La Sra. Lucas ahora está bajo cuidados de un programa de cuidados y apoyo para personas con enfermedades terminales y cuando la visito, siempre hace lo mejor que puede para vestirse bien, tener una sonrisa y nunca quejarse. Ha compartido muchas historias de su vida, sus luchas, y sé que parece estar bien, pero está preocupada. Estoy pidiendo ayuda para la Sra.
