Mother and Child Hit by Car
Donation protected
Friday, November 22 was supposed to be a great day. My sister, Mya, asked off work and gathered her family to go watch the annual Bed Race in Downtown Mocksville. They had never gone before and were so excited to watch something silly and have fun as a family. They parked their car, grabbed their chairs, and started to cross the road using the crosswalk to go get a good seat to watch the show! They were in the crosswalk and had almost made it across the street when a distracted driver hit them.
My sister was thankfully holding my 3 year old niece, MaeKayla, on her hip and saw the car right before impact. She used her body as a shield. Her husband, Mitch, could only watch in horror as it happened in slow motion...
My sister's and my niece's bodies were flung from the crosswalk, twisted in the air, and landed in the road on the other side. The impact hit my sister Mya so hard her boot flew off and landed in the car lot across the street. Mitch ran to his little girl first to get her out of the road so she wouldn't get hit again. By then, bystanders were gathering and had started to help while they waited for EMS.
The driver did stop and their information was gathered as well.
My niece is being so brave! She has quite a few abrasions from the road and she is very sore. Unfortunately, she did experience a buckle fracture on her leg so a cast was placed. It's black and blue like her Daddy's favorite team, the Carolina Panthers! And it's blue just like her favorite character from PJ Masks, Cat Boy!
Mya did her job as Mommy and protector. Her pelvis essentially snapped in half. Her tibia and fibula were fractured up to the knee. She underwent surgery early morning Saturday, November 23. They placed rods, pins, and plates in her leg and screws to stabilize her pelvis.
My sister stood for the first time since the accident today and is just in a lot of pain. The staff at the hospital we're at have been awesome! They are helping us so much. This holiday season we have a lot to be thankful for, especially them still being here with us. We're just glad they're going to be okay.
Unfortunately, it's going to be some time before Mya can go back to work and insurance and short-term disability comes in. Bills and expenses are going to pile up quickly and with the holidays right around the corner, they are going to need any help available.
If you are able to donate, please do. Thank you. We cannot describe how grateful we are.
If you are not able to donate, please share and send any good energy and prayers their way. If you are part of a church and they ask for prayer requests, please keep my sister and her family in mind.
Thank you so much.
