Hi Friends!
Nella is at the office & will be going into surgery this afternoon.
Please send some positive thoughts, messages & light to Jillian as she waits to hear how it goes. We’re thinking of you Nella bean!
Jillian has Venmo, if that's easier... any amount would help, even if it’s $5.
Nella’s story: Dear friends and family,
As you may or may not already be aware, our sweet girl Nella has been going through quite the rough patch for the past couple of years. Her mom has done her absolute best to provide her with the best support she can. However, many circumstances are out of her control, and she has unfortunately reached a point where she needs help. As someone who has been fiercely independent and successful for her entire life, it is hard for Jill to ask for help, so I’m doing it for her.
This week, Nella will undergo surgery to have her front leg amputated. Even though insurance covers a portion, her mom still has to cover many remaining costs, including high deductibles, the uncovered portion of the veterinary bills, specialty food and supplements to support her weakened stomach, as well as braces and physical therapy post-surgery. This has come at an incredible cost to Jill, who was unfortunately furloughed from her job as a result of the pandemic and has since exhausted almost all her savings covering Nella’s medical costs. However, Nella is not just a dog, Nella is family to Jill. They need each other and Jill will do whatever is she can for Nella. Again, Jill feels uncomfortable asking for help, and since we have yet to understand the exact medical procedures Nella will need, we can’t yet specify an amount. What Jill has said is that any little bit will help, even if it’s $5.
Here’s a little bit more information on Nella’s medical history and the story of what led her to her impending leg amputation. Two years ago, Nella started to gain weight unexpectedly. After going through several tests at the vet, including thyroid testing, her weight still could not be explained. After switching vets and getting further thyroid testing, the new vet was able to identify and treat the thyroid issue. However, some time had already passed, and for a dog that was supposed to be 40 pounds, she was suddenly 70 pounds. In the meantime, she began to develop mobility issues, so the vet prescribed her an NSAID pain reliever. However, the amount prescribed was relative to her increased weight, which caused an onslaught of digestive issues. She first developed an ulcer almost the size of her stomach, then had a surgery to get it removed. That surgery produced scar tissue that subsequently cut off circulation to her small intestine, which caused her to have another surgery to fix it. She then developed an abscess on her small intestine which is what caused her to get a third surgery to get 80% of her small intestine removed. With her new GI system operating at a lower capacity, she couldn’t hold her bowels at first, but was able to adjust over a period of time by consuming a specialty food as well as digestive and nutritional supplements. She was also able to be weaned off of the NSAIDs and clear up most of her belly issues, but the damage has been done to her knee after walking with extra weight for so long. Her x-rays show that she has some particles around her knee that could be pieces of bone or possibly cancer. We will know more on Wednesday, but the vet has said that there’s a 99% chance she will need her leg amputated. Once this process is completed, she will need a brace and physical therapy to help her to walk again.
She has been through a lot, but she has been so tough and she is pushing through. In the meantime, we are staying positive. Please send Nella and Jill all the positive thoughts and prayers that you can for their big vet appointment on Wednesday. And please help out if you can. Jill thanks you from the bottom of her heart.
