Moss Twomey Memorial Fund (Chief of Staff I.R.A. 1927 – 1936)

Moss Twomey has no memorial to his name. Now is the time to rectify this by erecting a Celtic Cross Memorial in his home village in Clondulane, just outside Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Moss was a steadfast Republican throughout his life, He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 and subsequently the Irish Republican Army where he held many ranks in Fermoy Battalion, Cork No. 2 Brigade, 1st Southern Division rising to the highest rank, Chief of Staff which he held from 1927 to 1936.

During the War of Independence, Moss remained loyal to the principles of the 1916 Proclamation and never wavered in those beliefs. He made two daring escapes—first from Spike Island Prison in Cork Harbour in November 1921, and later from Mountjoy Prison in Dublin. During the Civil War, Moss served as Adjutant General on the staff of Liam Lynch, and accompanied Bill Quirke, Sean Hyde, Frank Aiken and General Liam Lynch on the fateful day he was mortally wounded on the slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains on 10 April 1923.

While on the run throughout Ireland, Moss made a courageous public appearance to unveil and deliver the oration at the 60-foot round-tower monument dedicated to General Liam Lynch at Crohan Mountain near Goatenbridge on 7 April 1935.

A committee has been formed in Clondulane and a site identified for the memorial close to where Moss was reared, educated and worked before dedicating his life to fighting for Irish freedom.
