Mosquito Repellent

Hello!  My name is Mira Skladany, I'm from Seattle, Washington, and I have had the opportunity to spend the last months working in Brasilito, Costa Rica, for the NGO Abriendo Mentes as an art teacher. It has been an amazing experience for me, but you know what’s NOT  amazing?! 

MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASES! Brasilito is a small town where most families live in extreme poverty.  There is extremely limited access to healthcare, and because it’s a beach community, there are many open water sources. This means mosquito-borne diseases (Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya) run rapid, especially in this upcoming rainy season (September-December).  With mosquito repellent being priced at 10 dollars a bottle, tourists are fine, but many local community members are being forced to choose between repellent and food.

It should go without saying, but these diseases are dangerous and are particularly damaging to people living in poverty.  Dengue can be deadly, Chikungunya gives the affected person arthritis-like symptoms that can make work almost impossible, and Zika can cause pregnant woman to have children born with microcephaly (permanent brain damage).  Last week, the first case of Zika was confirmed in Brasilito.

I want to raise money to buy and distribute repellent to community members as part of a public health program in partnership with Abriendo Mentes (http://abriendomentes.org).  Now, repellent isn’t a surefire solution for preventing these diseases, but it’s a substantive start, and the number one recommended preventative measure by the CDC.  

I would be so thankful if you would show your support for this initiative by donating.  But more importantly, the people here could owe their lives to your help. The sooner we can raise money, the less cases of these preventable diseases there will be.  In this project everything counts, even a 5 dollar donation is halfway to one bottle.  In the (translated) words of Yahaira, a community member (pictured below) who's pregnant with her second child, "Dengue and Chikunguyna are horrible, but I'm afraid of Zika because it goes beyond my health- it's about my baby's.  I speak for myself, other pregnant woman, and my neighbors in saying that we would be so grateful if you chose to support us and our families." 


¡Hola!  Me llamo Mira Skladany de EEUU y he tenido la oportunidad de pasar el último mes trabajando en Brasilito, Costa Rica, para la organización Abriendo Mentes como maestra de Arte.  Ha sido una experiencia fantástica para mí, pero, ¡¿sabes lo que no es fantástico?!

¡LAS ENFERMEDADES QUE TRANSMITEN LOS MOSQUITOS!  Brasilito es un pueblo pequeño donde muchas familias viven en pobreza extrema.  Es muy difícil tener atención médica y, dado que es una comunidad de la playa, hay muchos sitios donde se puede acumular el agua, lo que supone  que  las enfermedades transmitidas por  mosquitos (como Zika, Dengue, y Chikungunya) son muy comunes aquí, especialmente durante la época de lluvias que va comenzar (de Septiembre a Diciembre). Dado que el repelente cuesta alrededor de 10 dólares por bote (8,83 €), los turistas pueden permitírselo, pero muchas personas locales se ven obligadas a elegir entre repelente y comida. 

No hace falta decir que estas enfermedades son muy peligrosas para las personas que viven bajo el umbral de la pobreza.  El Dengue puede matar, la Chinkungunya causa síntomas similares a la artritis que imposibilitan cualquier trabajo, y el Zika puede hacer que las mujeres embarazadas den a luz bebés con microcefalia (daño cerebral permanente).  La semana pasada, el primer caso de Zika fue confirmado en Brasilito.   

Quiero recaudar dinero para comprar y proveer repelente a las personas en la comunidad, como parte de un programa de salud con la organización Abriendo Mentes (abriendomentes.org/es).  Es cierto que el repelente no es la solución ideal, pero es un buen comienzo y el primer método de protección respaldado por el Centro de Prevención y Control de Enfermedades (CDC).

Estaría muy agradecida si mostraran su apoyo a esta iniciativa mediante una donación. Lo que es más importante, los habitantes de Brasilito podrían vivir mejor gracias a su ayuda.  Cada donación de 5 dólares (4,42€) ya supone la mitad de un bote de repelente.
