Donation protected
Renowned Indigenous artist Moses Amik Beaver died in Thunder Bay District Jail on Feb. 14, 2017. He had suffered from varying degrees of mental illness throughout his adult life. At the height of his suffering, he landed in jail on January 18, 2017 despite several attempts by his physician, Band, and family members to get him psychiatric attention. He was taken off suicide watch on Feb. 8, 2017, and was found hanged in his cell six days later...
A mandated Inquest originally scheduled for May 21, 2019 has been delayed - twice - with a third and final date set for May 25, 2020. The proceedings are expected to last four weeks, according to the Ministry of Attorney General (MAG).
We, Moses's family, are humbly requesting assistance for family members to attend proceedings and support each other during this difficult time.
The MAG is providing some financial assistance to us so we can participate, but not all costs are covered and many of us are taking leave from our employment so we can attend. We are all low income, and would appreciate any contributions.
Chi-Miigwetch/Thank you everyone for your generosity!
