Morogoro Health Improvement Project
Donation protected
Hi everyone,
My name is Eleni Comino, I'm 19 years old and from Australia. I am currently running a project based in Morogoro, Tanzania which is composed of several small projects all working together to provide the community (especially the women and children) with a more advanced health care system. I myself visited the area for several weeks in 2016 on a placement with 'Gap Medics', I observed and consulted with the doctors at the 'Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital' and we quickly came to the conclusion that action must be taken to assist the community.
The first component of the project is the repairs to the Paediatrics ward, this ward is overcrowded and in dire condition with proper medical supplies being scarce. Identified repairs will be made and equipment purchased to help this ward function properly.
The second component tackles the lack of child and maternal education in the region. A theatrical performance will be run by a local theatre group which will educate the community on these topics. As literacy levels are poor in the area, theatre is an effective and inclusive method of communicating to all, is culturally appropriate and does not discriminate education differences.
The third section of the project focuses on Malaria, a prominent disease in the area, we aim to distribute mosquito nets to not only the hospital but the four community health centres in the Region, effectively lowering the number of Malaria cases reaching the hospital and thus assisting with overcrowding issues at the hospital.
The fourth component targets and supports the health professionals in the region. Health educators will be running a workshop for the local health professionals with specific training on nutritional issues for pregnant women and children as well as public health matters.
All project components were the ideas of the Hospital and the council, ensuring the project is designed to meet the local community’s needs.
