Hey Hey! My name is Tekeidra Masters, a driven undergraduate at Valparaiso University, double majoring in Biology and Chemistry on the pre-med track. I have an unwavering commitment to fostering equitable healthcare that transcends the confines of clinical settings.
Growing up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, I experienced firsthand the stark contrast between two neighboring cities, separated only by a bridge that could be crossed in a mere two minutes. On one side of the bridge were flourishing schools blessed with ample resources, while on the other side, my reality was characterized by leaky classrooms, insufficient food, and unstable housing, all contributing to poorer health outcomes. This stark dichotomy fueled my unwavering commitment to addressing healthcare disparities, propelling me towards the path of becoming an emergency medicine physician. As a future emergency doctor, I'm committed to providing compassionate care to all patients irrespective of their socio-economic status or ability to pay. My personal journey resonates deeply with my vision — a vision anchored in the conviction that healing communities is just as important as healing individuals.
I have been blessed with the prestigious opportunity to participate in the Healthcare Study Abroad Trip to Morocco, Africa for Spring Break 2024! Morocco's healthcare system is a melting pot of different cultures like Arab, Berber, and French traditions. My understanding of how cultural differences affect patient care and communication will be amplified by this exposure. I will be engaging with healthcare facilities, observing various practices in private and public healthcare, public health fields, and alternative health domains. Beyond this, cultural immersion at UNESCO heritage sites and interactions with diverse community members will deepen, yet broaden my understanding of Morocco's healthcare system. These experiences align perfectly with my aspirations in emergency medicine by enhancing my cultural sensitivity, providing insights into public health challenges and resource allocation issues, and teaching me important lessons about handling high-stress scenarios in the ER by studying the disaster and emergency relief response mechanisms. All of these skills coupled together will be crucial in delivering equitable care to diverse patient populations.
To make this transformative journey a reality, I am seeking financial assistance to cover essential expenses like airfare and other general fees. Your support will not only aid my personal growth but also contribute to my commitment to healthcare equity. Join me in creating a meaningful impact as I strive to bridge healthcare disparities and empower communities. Thank you for your generosity and belief in this endeavor. My deadline for fundraising is February 23rd.
