I am Morgan Postlewait, and I need your help to get to the Stanford High School Summer College program. I am a junior at Astoria High School and have a class rank of 1 out of 126 students. Astoria is a small, rural community located where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Once the winter home of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Astoria has a rich and complex history, but unfortunately has limited financial resources available to its schools. I have all but exhausted the finite resources for advanced learning that Astoria, from both the high school and local community college. I am anxiously seeking more academic challenges, and Stanford High School Summer College would provide me with this opportunity.
Why would I spend the summer before my senior year at college when I could be home, earning money and solidifying friendships? Well, it has been about ten years since a student from AHS has been accepted to Stanford for undergraduate work, let alone the other schools that I have set my sights on, such as Harvard. I am ready for and need this opportunity for true academic challenge. Without attending Stanford High School Summer Program I fear I am not competitive enough to gain admission for undergraduate studies to the schools of my dreams, such as Stanford and Harvard.
Like other small, rural districts, Astoria lacks the resources to provide sufficient challenges to excelling students. AHS is not able to offer Advanced Placement, or AP, classes that have become the staple in competitive secondary education around the country. Fortunately, the school has enabled me to take some of these courses online in an effort to advance my education, but it is not enough.
Like college, the Stanford High School Summer Program is expensive. It is the summer term of classes offered to talented and driven high school students, who then have the opportunity to earn up to 12 credit hours at Stanford. This head start could be the difference for acceptance at Harvard or Stanford next year. After modest financial aid from Stanford and generous aid to Astoria High School Scholarship Inc. I still have $5,500 to raise. If I can raise this amount, my family and I will be able to make up the rest.
Please consider contributing to help a driven girl from a great small town meet her goals.
