Hi, my name is Morgan and I am a 30 year old trans woman. At an early age, I knew that something wasn’t right with my body but I wasn’t able to take steps to correct that until roughly two years ago. It’s been a whirlwind of positive changes and some painful losses. I’ve started to feel better about myself, my body and my future. While I wasn’t sure at first whether I wanted to have a vaginoplasty (bottom surgery), I’ve come to realize that the fear of looking back on this period of my life with my regret massively outweighs my anxiety about recovery. After consulting in the DC area, I have a surgical date this fall and my job has allowed me to be flexible to accommodate my recovery. In a lot of ways, the stars have aligned and I have an opportunity to make another major positive change in my life.
However, there are still some obstacles in the way. Beyond bottom surgery, I also want to have a chondrolaryngoplasty (tracheal shave). Doing them at the same time will save me a lot of money in the long-run and address my main source of facial dysphoria. However, my insurance company won’t cover the cost of pretty much anything above my waist so the extra operating room time, anesthesia and cost of the procedure are my responsibility. The recovery process, including purchasing dilators, is also already looking expensive and I’m sure unexpected things will come up. If there are complications, I could quickly end up in a precarious financial position. After consulting and reviewing documentation, I’ve settled on 5k as the target number. I’ve broken it down as follows:
Tracheal shave:
Procedure : $3,500
Extra hour in the OR: $800
Extra hour of anesthesia: $500
That, plus the dilators I will have to purchase, rounds roughly 5k. I will have to work it out with my insurance to see what the total cost for the bottom surgery will be, but this feels like a good spot to start and I’ll keep this page updated as things develop.
Update: I'm floored by the response to this. Since the first goal has been meet, I've revised to include the additional $1500 to cover my insurance deductable for bottom surgery.
