More Than Memory: A Life in Process

Donation protected
More than Memory: A Life in Process is an applied theater research project created by Casey Hayes-Deats, Christopher Johnston, and Karron Karr that explores devising original theater with seniors with Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia.

The goal of this project is to create opportunities for the seniors to exercise agency by honoring them as artists and using theater as a means of facilitating social interactions. In addition to identifying best practices for collaborating with seniors with dementia, we are researching theater's ability to address the isolation, powerlessness, and stigma that often accompanies dementia. We have titled our project "More than Memory: A Life In Process" to reflect the idea that people can continue to lead full lives and make meaning beyond the boundaries  - or limitations - of memory.

Over a 10 week period, and with the support of professional actors, we are facilitating a variety of storytelling, movement-based, and improvisational activities with adults with dementia to create six original short plays. At the end of our 10 weeks, we will host a celebratory sharing  during which those plays will be performed by both the actors and seniors.

A donation from you will allow us to recover costs associated with travel and medical tests that were required in order to work with the seniors;  document the seniors work so that they will have evidence of their creations; and produce a high-quality final sharing that honors the seniors as artists in front of their caretakers and families.

Project Budget:

Videography & Photography - $200
Medical Testing Expenses - $200
Travel Expenses - $200
Food for Final Sharing - $200
Cast T-Shirts for Final Sharing - $200
Props for Final Sharing - $50
Printing of Photo Book Keepsakes for Seniors - $200
Promotional/Printed Materials - $150
Misc. Expenses - $100

TOTAL = $1,500

Only 5 weeks remain of our project, meaning every donation will be put to immediate use! We are so very thankful for your support, as it will enable us to appropriately honor the seniors' who have already inspired us so much, as well as appropriately thank the actors without whom this project would not be possible.

With deep gratitude,
Casey, Chris and Karron
