Tammy Haynes and Claudia Engel are organizing this fundraising appeal on behalf of Manuela & Jared Groth, to help raise vital funds for medical and living expenses.

Imagine

Imagine your life changing in an instant. Imagine one day you are home, enjoying time with your family, and the next. . . you are in the hospital not sure when you can return home again.

Imagine not being able to see or hug your young children, at all. Not even on their birthday.

Imagine limited time with your husband, your partner who will see you through this new reality.

Imagine the devastation of hearing “you have a rare and aggressive cancer” at age 41.

It happened to Manuela and her family and they would deeply appreciate your help.

Only a month prior

Manuela began to have blurred vision in one eye. The doctor first diagnosed her with a rare autoimmune disease. Not long after seeking help and beginning treatment, her symptoms worsened and she found herself at the emergency room. After 20 hours of triage, she was admitted to the Wilmot Cancer Institute @ Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

After extensive testing at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, she was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, also called Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Diagnosed with this horrible cancer only four days after she was admitted, doctors recommended an aggressive cancer treatment to try to stop this rapid growing cancer in her body. The next day, brave Manuela started four rounds of chemo in one day! Her body could not handle the treatment, and she found herself in the ICU on dialysis, receiving blood transfusions and platelets.

Two days after the diagnosis

Two days after the diagnosis was her daughter’s 11th birthday. Unfortunately, the family could not be together due to Covid-19 restrictions at the hospital. Imagine what it is like for a family to celebrate their child’s birthday and deal with this lifechanging diagnosis at the same time? How does a child comprehend that? To make matters worse, her son’s birthday is at the end of this month as well. She won’t be home to celebrate his birthday either.

 The Groth Family

We have been friends with Manuela for over a decade. We first met at a Mom’s Club, where we witnessed her doing charity work for children, those in need and the community at large. We also saw what a loving, devoted, smart and creative mother she is to her children, Alexander (13) and Annika (11). Manuela is a dependable friend. She is warm, giving and a great listener always offering support and a little humor when you need it.

Manuela loves to be active and enjoyed many outdoor activities with her family before she got sick. She loved to hike mountainous trails, bike long distances on a sunny days and walk along the shoreline at Hamlin Beach. She took pride in her gardens and shared the fruits of her labor with her family by preparing healthy meals and snacks. She also loved to ski! For Christmas she got a season pass to enjoy many days of skiing with her family. Unfortunately, she was only able to go one time before getting sick. When she wasn’t enjoying the great outdoors, she was home designing and crocheting elaborate, colorful hats and scarves for children.

Annika is an active child and talented gymnast who loves musicals and going to school. Alexander is a high honor roll student and takes great pride as a musician, playing the Sousaphone in the school’s marching band.

Jared is a loving husband and father, with a great sense of humor. He and Alexander have worked hard together to achieve brown belts in Kyokushin Karate.

Manuela and Jared are both devoted to community service. They have spent much of their careers helping those with mental and physical disabilities. The joy that we personally have witnessed on their faces, as they describe the residents they have helped, is heartwarming. Manuela and Jared are truly genuine, loving people that just want to make a difference for others.

It is an ironic twist, that the people who have given so much to others, are now the ones who are truly needing help.

How your donation will help

Your donation will help the Groth family to survive the battle with unexpected medical costs, loss of income from both Manuela and Jared. Their insurance deductible for the cancer treatment alone is $5000. Jared has been taking time off work to juggle the kids schedules and will be taking time off work to take care of Manuela at home during her long road of recovery. They are in urgent need of funds right now, to cover these on-going living expenses and ensure Manuela's medical treatment.

Thank you

No words can express what your generosity means to the Groth family. They will have to worry a little less to meet their children’s needs, are able to keep their home and are able to manage the overwhelming medical costs they are facing. Your donation will help them to focus on rebuilding their new normal. It will give Manuela the energy and mental freedom to concentrate on her own well-being instead of worrying how this is impacting their financial future.
