3D Printing Social Media Sculptures

"There is no art form as pure as 3D Printing."

-Michelangelo, 1524.

I want to talk to you about one of my ideas. Next month, there will be a group show here in NYC, featuring contemporary Latin American artists. Lucky me, I was selected to be a part of this show and I'm hard at work making this idea come to life.

I won't make you read much more if you don't want to, so here's the short version: I'm going to build a machine that keeps track of how millions of people mention God on social media. It'll be 3D printed and interactive church bell, with lights and screens. I need help to afford the printing.

If you help, you'll not only get my gratitude and a big #hug from me, you will also get some goodies! So if you're interested in helping, WOOOOOOO! keep reading!

The gallery show is geared around the exploration of modern religion and how it adapts/fades/ survives/changes in response to the modern world. I'm hoping to merge three of my biggest interests, 3D printing, interactivity, and social media, to see how they hold up in a religious context.

"If you hashtag, they shall come."

- Aristotle

If you know me, you'll know I'm not a religious man, not in the traditional sense anyway. I want to conduct an experiment, I want to build an interactive religious object. A church bell that keeps its eye on social media in search of #God.

The bell will light up every time #God is used (every 3-6 seconds, how about that!). The light visible from afar and from directly below the bell. At the same time, the mentions of #God will be continuously scrolling through a small screen, showing the feed in real time.

The idea is to visualize the contrast between the sanctity and historical representation of the word "God" and the way we are exposed to it on a daily basis in social channels and its new associations.

The bell will be 3D printed, and it will be adorned with a pattern reminiscent of the beautiful abstract decorations of a mosque. Light will shine from inside and seep through the material, lighting it all up and creating an effect very much like sunlight passing through the clouds.

"In social media, we create our own myths, we are our own canons, we are our own heroes."

- Confucious, 450 BC.
