I will be running a 10km to raise money for Moray Women’s Aid on the 11th of may. Over the next 2 months my aim is to raise £800 for this amazing charity who help both women and children experiencing/fleeing domestic abuse.
I will be posting my training on both Strava and social media with the link available for any donations ☺️
Why am I raising money for this particular charity? Here are 10 facts about domestic abuse that make this cause so important to me.
Did you know -
1. 1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.
2. The police receive a domestic abuse-related call every 30 seconds
3. On average, one woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days
4. It takes, on average, 7 attempts before a woman is able to leave for good
5. Women who experience domestic abuse are twice as likely to experience depression, and 40% of homeless women state domestic abuse as a contributory factor to their homelessness.
6. It is estimated that around 3 women a week die by suicide as a result of domestic abuse.
7. 20% of children in the UK have lived with an adult perpetrating domestic abuse. That’s 1 in 5 kids.
8. Domestic abuse costs the UK an estimated £23 billion a year. It is not only weighing on our physical and emotional health, but also our economy.
9. 41% of UK girls aged 14 to 17 in an intimate relationship experienced some form of sexual violence from their partner.
10. 93% of defendants in domestic abuse cases are male; 84% of victims are female. And yet, women are three times more likely to be arrested for incidents of abuse.
Domestic abuse is currently a uk national emergency.
As someone who has experienced domestic abuse, and knows the impact it can have on you physically, mentally, financially and emotionally. I know the importance of these charities and the positive impact they have on survivors and their families. A minimum of £427 million is needed to be invested per year to fund specialist domestic abuse services for women and their children across England alone (Women’s Aid, 2023).
If you are able to donate to this amazing cause, anything little or large is appreciated. Thank you
