Mooka’s Medical Care

Donation protected
Hey everyone, this is Erika (and Melissa) and we are humbly asking for your good vibes, prayers, and any financial donation you can spare for our sweet Mooka. We cannot express our gratitude enough for all of the support we’ve received so far. Please help us relieve the financial burden so we can get all the care we need for our Mooka!

*** TW: some of these photos may be difficult to look at. We love all of our fellow dog lovers out there and thank you for being here.

Mooka was attacked by another dog. It was a very unexpected situation, so we were shocked when it happened. Mooka suffered bite wounds around her face and neck and spent 4 nights at the emergency vet. They put her on fluids, oxygen, medication, and did ultrasounds, x-rays, chest taps, and stitches.

The major concerns that would’ve required surgery, have thankfully passed. The initial concern was about any potential puncture wounds to her chest (there were none) and puncture wounds to her thoracic cavity, which would’ve caused air to surround her lungs and require immediate surgery. The vet team monitored her often and put her on Oxygen for 3 days.  Initially the first ultrasound showed potential concern so they did a chest tap to pull the air out. There was barely any in there, but the risk of a chest tap is that it can also make that problem worse. Her subsequent x-rays showed some concern off and on for about 2 days, but finally she was out of the woods. Yay no pneumothorax!

After that was settled, the vets moved forward to treat her wounds. They had to put her under anesthesia in order to shave back her fur to access them. Her largest injury was about 4 inches below/behind her left ear. She had some severe lacerations on her right ear as well, so both sides required stitches. The multiple puncture wounds around her neck are not large enough to need stitches, and they also need to remain open to allow draining to push out any potential infections. In some photos, you’ll see the inflammation and bruising. She looked like she ate some bumble bees!

Her emergency bills came to over $6,400. We still have follow up visits/med management and the vets are confident she will need a surgery to remove the dying tissue behind her ear.  We have at least 2 weeks for her wounds to heal (hopefully) and then address the need for surgery.

For those of you who don’t know Mooka, I have had her since she was about a year old. She’s about 13 1/2 now, and has the true Boulavsky spirit of being a fighter. The vet team absolutely loved her, and we all felt ourselves in good spirits after our visit with her on day 2. While they were preparing a feeding tube in the back,  we finally got her to eat some cheeseburgers for us! She also stood up and walked outside to use the bathroom.

We will update about her recovery, and we can not express how truly grateful we are to receive any type of help. We cannot express how much we have appreciated our support system throughout this time, and how much we appreciate all of you for taking the time to read Mooka’s story, to share, and donate. Our hearts are so full with all of the love we’ve received so far.
