In 2015, our great grandparents Herb and Stella Lanes property of Big Flat went into my younger brother Thomas’ name. Our family started remodeling the inside to make his, along with my mother Becky’s, “Handicap Accessible Dream Home”. The bathroom, kitchen, bedrooms, living room, and laundry room were all COMPLETELY accessible to Thomas’ wants, needs, and desires. Finishing in 2019, Thomas successfully had his own little paradise away from the world of everyday struggles living with Cerebral Palsy.
They have also welcomed countless families and friends into their home to come and feel warmth, love, and understanding of all different situations. From lending out the mobility shower to giving someone a clean pair of socks or a warm hat to take home, I have seen both my mother and brother effortlessly give anything to help make someone’s life a little bit easier and always accepting those for who they are with a smile.
As most know now, on Thursday, August 5, 2021 a great tragedy happened to our dear family. The Monument Fire took such a treasure from us in a blink of an eye. With generations of heartache and tears over such a tremendous loss, our hearts are the heaviest alongside our dear Thomas. The man which not only keeps our family pushing forward, but who also keeps us full of love and always laughing.
As we have proved in the past few years, we can rebuild a home that is needed for Thomas’ success in life. For the time being, we are starting by adjusting the small cabin they will be living in for now. Our goal is to temporarily create a handicap haven to help life heal a little easier until the next chapter begins.
We understand our entire community is going through heartache and we are not alone with this experience. This is our time to stand together and support one another when we need it most.
Thank you for your time, love, and compassion,
Lacy Lane Duncan
