Monty's Memorial Fund: Help Family After Sudden Loss

Donation protected
Last week, my father — Trueman “Monty” Montfort, Jr. — passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep. He was only 64.

Monty loved rock n roll. Especially Led Zeppelin. He was born with an ear for music, and was widely considered to be one of the best audio engineers in the business. He loved being out on the water. He was raised on the Chesapeake Bay and devoted his summers to teaching my sister and I how to swim, crab, and drive the Jon boat. He absolutely adored dogs, and whenever he was home, he could always be found with a small pack of puppies following his every footstep. He treated every dog he met like family.

He was witty, funny, the quintessential goofball dad with a mischievous streak. And yet, beneath it all, he seemed to carry the depth, strength, and wisdom of a thousand generations. He was fast to lend a helping hand and was, at his core, both selfless and strong, always willing to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders so that we wouldn’t have to.

Because above all, Monty loved his family. He was our rock, our center of the universe, our hero.

He was also my mother’s sole provider and primary caregiver. Tammy Montfort, 62, was the love of his life. And when Tammy became disabled after an accident left her back broken in two places, Monty stood firmly by her side. Since then, Tammy has endured a botched back surgery, a degenerative disc disease diagnosis, and severe, worsening scoliosis that has left her spine in such bad shape that she struggles with basic mobility. These days, she can barely walk, even with assistance. Now that Monty is gone, in his honor, we are asking Monty’s community to help us pick up the mantle and care for Tammy’s significant medical needs.

Monty did not have life insurance and Tammy cannot receive social security survivor’s benefits until she turns 65, so in addition to unbearable grief, Monty’s passing comes with a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty for our family.

Donations to Monty’s Memorial Fund will go toward:

  • Cremation and Celebration of Life costs;
  • Retrofitting Tammy’s home to be disability-friendly, so that she can be as independent as possible (i.e. installing a stair lift);
  • A disability-friendly vehicle; and
  • Short term monthly expenses while we make long term care arrangements.
