Montgomery Twins Medical Expenses

Donation protected
We are a group of friends trying to help our best friends, Sarah and Logan Montgomery, and their twins, Saxon and Wilder. Please read below for the complete story, and please, if you are not in a position to donate, please please say a daily prayer for our boys and their family. Please read all updates below and we will continue to add updates as we go…

 ***How we started***

From Sarah, Mother of Saxon and Wilder:

Wanted to say thank you to everyone that has kept us in your thoughts and prayers the past week.

Unfortunately, on Saturday July 16th, we noticed the boys had shortness of breath and were breathing rapidly. Thankfully we made the decision to go to the ER. They both tested positive for RSV and were admitted. Wilder went straight into the Pediatric ICU (PICU) and in less than 5 hours was moved onto a breathing tube. His brother Saxon was a bit better and only needed oxygen. However this changed by midday Sunday and he too had to be put on a breathing tube. Both had to have spinal taps and cultures ran. By Tuesday we found out that in addition to RSV the boys have H Flu (Haemophilus influenzae) along with pneumonia in their right lungs.

Also on Tuesday, both boys had their tubes removed. Wilder had up and down progress and was put on a Non-invasive ventilation which supported his breathing. Saxon was doing a bit better and was put on a Vapotherm machine. Both boys were being fed breastmilk via a NG tube.

The boys had shown great progress. Unfortunately, come Friday Wilder took a turn. They noticed his breathing was worsening. They tried increasing the machines and increasing breathing treatments. We then got an X-ray and noticed he had lots of mucus in the upper portion of his right lung. After some time they made the decision to re-intubate him.

During the procedure Wilder’s heart rate began to drop and because they were trying to intubate they couldn’t supply oxygen quickly. They then called a code blue. Thankfully they were able to bring his heart rate back up and stabilize him with compression and the oxygen bag.

Once stable and now with the help of an anesthesiologist both doctors were able to place the tube. Upon initial X-ray they placed the tube too low and had to readjust. The second X-ray showed correct placement. We are grateful for his doctors, nurses, the code team, respiratory theory team and everyone that came in seconds to assist.

Wilder will most likely have the tube for another week. We are just going to give him all the time he needs to rest. He is being given sedation medication to ease him. He is still a little alert but not in any pain.

By Sunday (7/24), Saxon showed great progress and is currently on just wall oxygen at .5 litters. We are hopeful to bring him home by Tuesday or Wednesday (7/26-7/27) once he is completely off oxygen and finished the antibiotics for the H Flu.

In addition to everything, Logan and I both tested positive for Covid while in the hospital with the boys. We contracted this from Addi who contracted it from her daycare earlier in the week (7/11) - the outbreak was so bad at her daycare they shut her classroom down…Logan had to leave the hospital on Sunday the day after we arrived. They allowed me to stay as I am breastfeeding. Thankfully my mom came to take his place and give me mental support. We were under complete isolation and could not leave the rooms and could not visit the other twin. This stayed this way for two days before the hospital made the decision for us to walk between the rooms. The boys have both tested negative for Covid 4 times this week. After 5 days of isolation we were finally able to leave the rooms and walk the halls. Since we are through with quarantine and have no symptoms Logan is now able to visit his sons and I was able to see Addi after a very long 7 days.

So grateful for family/friends who are helping to take care of Addi while I have been in the hospital with the boys and while Logan has been quarantining/working. At this point they are getting everything they need and all we can do is wait until the RSV passes and they have had at least 7 days of antibiotics.

Back story to this whole ordeal is that the boys had their first check up on Monday, 7/11 (looked great). They had a follow up appointment on Thursday, 7/14 (had a runny nose but doc said they looked beautiful). Then on Friday, 7/15 I had a scare and ran them to the ER. The doctor at the ER checked the boys and they looked great. So at this point they have been seen 3 times by doctors in 5 days. My gut feeling Saturday 7/16 to bring them back to the ER was the right decision. I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you are worried or have a gut instinct then LISTEN. I’m so happy we came back when we did.

Please keep our family in your prayers. And thank you to everyone that has been praying already and sending us your love. We are grateful. Hopefully we will have more good news in the next few days to come.
