The 2019 Monsters I Have Been Book Tour needs your help!
What is Monsters I Have Been?
My second full-length poetry collection, Monsters I Have Been (Alice James Books) , is a timely, critical exploration of masculinities.
Toxic masculinity, hyper-masculinity, homophobia, and masculinities considered outside the norm. Cowboys. Samurai. Frankenstein. Man-babies. Emperor Palpatine. Ultraman. Voltron. Prince. J-Pop stars.
Using an invented method akin to a cut-up—called frankenpo—the book takes various source texts, puts them in a blender, and reconstructs them as poetry.
What happens when you mix POTUS45's inaugural speech with Emperor Palpatine's speech announcing the formation of the Galactic Empire? A poem that is essentially a discussion of the state, patriarchy, and militarism .
How Can I Help?
You can help me bring this conversation from Los Angeles to San Francisco/Oakland, Seattle, Minneapolis, and New York City. Sharing this page or contributing to the tour means you support experimental, unapologetic, critical poetry. It means opening spaces for conversation about masculinities, toxic or otherwise. All funds raised will go towards travel costs, especially plane tickets and housing.
Can I Donate Airline Miles?
Absolutely. If you have airline miles you can donate, Monsters will gladly accept. For example, a round-trip ticket between LA and Minneapolis is about 35,000 Delta SkyMiles or 18,500 Southwest Rapid Reward miles. Please get in touch if you can donate miles, even if you can only cover a one-way ticket. All miles donors will receive a signed copy of Monsters I Have Been, a special edition enamel pin, and a special edition broadside.
I pledge that whenever Monsters I Have Been is invited for a reading, I will make sure that a woman-identified, trans, gender non-conforming, or queer poet is also on the line-up.
