2017 Monster & Sea 24hr Paddle:   Port Dover April 15-16, 2017

We are at it again!!

April 15-16, 2017, 8am-8am, 24 hours of paddling to raise money for families in our community battling cancer.

This year the Ontario Team will be hosted out of Port Dover and will be doing something a little different! The team will be paddling 24 hours straight, as a team, covering a 100+ kilometer stretch of the Grand River. We’ll have checkpoints en route where friends, family and the community can join us on the water or show their support!

A Little Monster & Sea 24 hour paddle history…

During the spring of 2015, a team of 6 paddlers out of Seattle, WA paddled 24 hours to raise money for families in the fight with cancer. They blew past their fundraising goals and the event exceeded all expectations in donations and support. At midnight they had over 30 people on the water with them! They were able to stuff 7 envelopes each with $1000 and give them to 7 families battling cancer head on.

The event was the first of its kind and was inspired by Troy Nebeker, who himself was in the fight when his wife was diagnosed. From that day forward, he decided we all need to live life to the fullest, "go" just because we can and give back whenever we can. That was the birth of the brand Monster & Sea - the monster being cancer and the Sea being where he found inspiration and strength.

With 7 envelopes stuffed by the Seattle team in 2015, Troy felt it only fitting to see if 6 other communities would be willing to take part in this event the following year! So last year, from 8am on March 26th until 8am March 27th, 7 teams simultaneously embarked on a 24hr paddle in various parts of North America. Collectively, the 7 teams raised $50,000! That's 50 envelopes going directly to 50 families in need! In 2017, the event will see 20+ team…..imagine what we can do.

My name is Ty Backus and I am really excited this year to be heading up the Monster & Sea team from Port Dover, Ontario. Last year, I approached the Monster & Sea Ontario team captain, Jessica Rando and asked if it would be possible to create a second team of 6 that would help raise funds and would paddle the same 24 hours but at a different location; Port Dover. What resulted was something truly incredible! The Ontario team became a team of 12, 6 paddling in Toronto and 6 paddling in Port Dover that collectively raised over $9000 and helped 9 families battling cancer right here in our communities! It was amazing to see how supportive the community was in this endeavor and how many people came out to show their support both day and night!

We lost one of our paddle buddies and family member who last year braved the sub-zero temperatures all night to help us in the cause under a beautiful blood moon over the Port Dover pier. Lucas Graham tragically lost his life in a car accident in the summer of 2016 and he will be in our thoughts as we embark on the 2017 event and when paddling through the piers of Port Dover.

Monster and Sea 24 Event Details

When:
Easter Weekend,
8:00am on Saturday, April 15th to 8:00am on Sunday, April 17th.

Location:
Port Dover is the host location.
The team will be paddling 24 hours straight and a 100+ km stretch of the Grand River whose mouth is close to Port Dover Beach.

How do I get involved?
Email [e-mail geredigeerd] if you are interested in getting involved or follow any of the team members on Facebook as we will be posting lots of details over the coming weeks!

So where will the money go you ask?
Well, here in Canada we are very lucky to have amazing health coverage to help cover individual treatment expenses, but what is not covered are the additional day to day expenses, the potential loss of income, and all of those things you cannot monetize; stress, anxiety, fear.....they have an even greater cost.

Benificiaries of the Monster and Sea 24 are friends and people within our community that are fighting cancer and need help as well as the morale boost that comes from knowing that others care. Funds are dispersed to me and are then placed in envelopes of $1000 each. Any left over amount is equally divided among the people we help. They are then delivered directly to people that need help by members of Port Dover Team so that they may get immediate help.

So for them, and many others, we paddle.

Thank you everyone for your generous support! Know that your donations will go to a great place and will make a difference in people's lives. We truly appreciate all donations but please know, support comes in many shapes and forms so even if you are not able to make a donation, there are many other ways to give! Come paddle with us, hang out with us or just send a message with your "hoorays"!   : )

Sincerely,
Tyler and the M&S 24 Paddle Port Dover Team
