UPDATE: As with many great plans made over the last few months, sadly COVID 19 has meant that the below adventure was initially postposed to October, and then cancelled.
However, in order to avoid the flood of angry donors demanding their money back (and hopefully push towards our fundraising target), we decided we needed to devise a new plan that was possible within the UK.
As a result, we’ve somehow found ourselves booked in to do the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge on the 17th of October, this involves climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours. The challenge starts in Scotland at Ben Nevis, which at 1,344 metres is the tallest of the three. From there we will drive south into the Lake District where we climb Scafell Pike (978m) in the middle of the night. The final of the three is the Welsh mountain, Snowdon, standing at no less than 1,085m. Which we hope to summit within 24 hours of crossing the start line in Scotland.
We think the charities we have selected are just as, if not more, relevant now than they were in February, so we are very keen to raise the money we had targeted.
To existing donors - thank you again, I hope the above is enough to avoid a refund!
To any others thinking about supporting, the link below is still open and we would really appreciate any donations, large or small.
George, Tom & Alex Monkey Bike across Morocco.
In the spring of 2020, the three man team will be travelling across the spectacular and challenging Moroccan landscape for charity. The expedition will take them from the heat and remoteness of the Sahara Desert over the peaks of the Atlas Mountains (at over 4,000m) on 2 ft high, 50cc Monkey Bikes (particularly challenging for George, standing well over 6ft tall). These bikes were originally designed as a Children’s ride in a Japanese theme park, so will be even less equipped than their riders to deal with the rather challenging terrain.
The funds we are hoping to raise will be equally split between two incredibly worthwhile causes, listed below. Any donations, small or large will be greatly appreciated, & fear not, you will not be paying for pen knives, survival handbooks or the inevitable Monkey Bike repairs – 100% of your donations will be passed to the below charities.
BEAM (https://beam.org/)
· Homelessness in London is a serious problem with 1 in 53 Londoners without a home
· It is often difficult to know how to best help these people (Does handing over the change in my pocket have a positive impact?)
· Beam is an amazing tech platform that crowdfunds employment training for homeless Londoners to get them into stable, paid work.
· It works by taking on members recommended by partner homeless charities, helping them decide what training to pursue, setting up their online crowdfunding on the Beam website, and paying fees directly to training organisations once individual campaigns reach their targets.
COOL EARTH (https://www.coolearth.org/)
· Half the worlds rainforest has been lost in the last 40 years.
· Cool Earth is a charity that works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and its impact on climate change.
· Cool Earth believes the only way to halt destruction is to align the future of the rainforest with the people best placed to protect it. This means placing the forest in the hands of the people who rely on its survival for their survival.
· It works with indigenous villages to enable them to build a better lifestyle through preserving the rainforest than they would from participating in clearing it.
· These people don’t clear the rainforest because they want to, it’s a response to a lack of economic opportunity, Cool Earth works to provide this opportunity.
