Our amazing friend Monica is going through cancer for the second time. It is a totally different cancer from the first.  She has had two surgeries in the last month and cancer cells are still present. Her team of doctors have decided on no more surgery. They want to go forward with a new type of radiation called proton which is where they can specify the exact place for the radiation to work. The risks with the old type of radiation are to her heart and lungs where the new radiation can avoid this. There are only 20 sites in the US and none of those are in NY. Sloan Kettering where Monica goes for treatment is building a center but it will not be ready until next year. Sooo...Monica needs to go to Somerset, NJ to stay for 5-6 weeks where radiation will be administered 5 days/week. This is very costly as she will need a place to stay with a kitchenette, food for the time she is there, gas for traveling back and forth on the weekends, and finances to help with other things. We are excited that her radiation oncologist got her insurance company to approve this new type of radiation as it is very expensive!

Monica's biggest concern is that she will miss Nena during this time. So she will be traveling home on the weekends to see her. If fatigue sets in, then we are going to figure on going down to pick her up and bring her home taking her back on Monday.

Monica also just got a kitten. We figure this kitten is good therapy for her and want her to be able to take the kitten with her. The hotels we are looking at are pet friendly but  also costly.

All in all, we are praying that in the end, this radiation and time away from her family especially, will be worth it. Monica has always maintained a positive attitude and faith deep in Christ. We are trusting in the power of prayer.

Please help in any way you can  and help us get Monica and Nena through this next couple of months.
