Monica's 2nd chance lung transplant
Donation protected
As our friend Monica Kaplan moves closer to getting the call for her second double lung transplant, we, her friends, would like to tell you a little bit about her, her family and why we are organizing a fundraising effort to help her family.
Monica’s Story:
Monica’s medical journey began at the age of 24 when she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus. Over the years this condition has caused many health complications, eventually scarring her lungs. This led to the need in 2012 for Monica to have a double lung transplant at St. Joe’s hospital in Phoenix. After a couple of years of good health her body started developing symptoms of rejection of her new lungs. Over the course of a year and a half the rejection has progressed to the degree that she had to go back on oxygen one year ago and now needs another transplant.
About a year ago Monica had to stop working a part-time job she loved at Prescott’s Community Pregnancy Center because of frequent hospitalizations and countless trips to Phoenix for experimental treatments and check-ups. It’s been a hard year on the family both financially and emotionally. Brad works for the State of Arizona’s Vocational Rehabilitation program, and Monica does what she can by freelance writing and being a Mary Kay consultant. Nevertheless, expenses have outpaced income, adding a significant level of stress going into another major surgery and extended recovery.
Following her surgery, Monica will be required to rent a place to stay in Phoenix so that she will be close to the hospital for a minimum of three months while she goes through recovery and rehabilitation. She will be making frequent trips to St. Joseph’s for blood tests, breathing tests, X-rays and other tests to monitor her condition. Her husband will need to stay at their home in Prescott and continue to work and also care for their children. Monica is very blessed that her sister Melanie will travel from Texas to stay with her in Phoenix and help with the care and assistance she will require.
Getting approved to have a second double lung transplant was a very difficult thing to do, but Monica passed all of the medical testing and was finally placed on the waiting list!!! God has blessed her with this tremendous second opportunity to extend her time with her awesome husband, Brad, and her two precious children, Rachel, 16, and Trevor, 13, as well as all of her extended family and friends!
Dear friends and family, let’s rally together and raise some money for this beautiful family in their hour of need!!!! In addition to the incredible financial strain that they have already been under during this last year, they will have added expenses following Monica’s transplant surgery. Any amount, no matter the size, is SO appreciated!
In addition to your financial donation we ask for your continued prayers for Monica as she waits for the call that there is a donor and then for to a full and speedy recovery after her transplant surgery. She and her husband have deep faith that God will provide for their additional needs over the months following her surgery.
We will post updates as they are shared by her family. Your kind thoughts and prayers will be passed on to Monica and her family.
