Surrey Square Covid-19 Fundraising for children with NRPF
The Need
When we knew that school would close on 20th March 2020, we were acutely aware that many of our families would struggle to feed their children every day. At Surrey Square our pupils receive two free meals a day – a healthy start with thanks to support from Magic Breakfast, and a freshly-cooked lunch. We would be able to continue to support those children entitled to Free School Meals through our school budget. However, there is a group of children who are not eligible for Free School Meals due to having No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF). This is a restriction often imposed by the Home Office to families who have Leave to Remain and means that they are not entitled to social housing or any welfare benefits, which includes Free School Meals.
Action taken
At the time, we knew that we had 15 children (8 families) from our school community in this situation so we set out to raise £5 per day to feed them by starting this campaign. The initial goal was to raise £375 per week - £3750 for 10 weeks. After a couple of weeks, two more families with NRPF made themselves known to us, increasing the number of children to 23. Each of those children has had a £25 Tesco voucher per week since the week beginning 23rd March. The funds raised by the 108 people who responded to this Go Fund Me page were £4330. The funds will have been used by the end of May.
SO where are we now?
As you are aware, schools will not be fully open and many of our families will continue to be in the same situation, struggling to afford food for their children. We are trying to raise a further £6000 in order to ensure that these families are able to afford food for the next 10 weeks. Please share and donate what you can.
