Almost 1 year ago, July 2016, life suddenly changed for my uncle Jimmy Monaco and his family. After seeking care for abdominal pain, a series of tests were performed which revealed he had developed pancreatic cancer which had spread to his liver. August 29, 2016 he began treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Chicago where he has received chemotherapy 3x month since. Treatments are grueling and combined with the travel required represent a significant physical but also financial toll on him and his family.
The loving husband of Cathy, the amazing father of Tony and Christina (Nick), the proud Poppi of Charlotte and Nicholas, the brother of 5 sisters, the fun Uncle to a large family, and the friend of many, Jimmy has faced this cancer diagnosis with humor, strength and courage.
He is unable to work at this time, and Cathy continues her full-time job while traveling and supporting her husband. In the last year, Jimmy was able to watch his son Tony graduate from the police academy and also proudly welcome his second grandchild.
In Matthew 22, when asked what the greatest commandment in all of Scripture is, Jesus responded, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and secondly You shall love your neighbor as yourself”
As family and as friends we have been given an opportunity to tangibly bless them as they walk through this challenging season. Until one is there, it is hard to imagine the unexpected difficulties and fears that accompany a cancer diagnosis. Through our financial support, we can give the Monaco family fresh hope, faith and encouragement for the journey ahead, one we believe will end with Jimmy healed and living out his days with fullness of strength and joy.
