Monacan Tribal Gardens Project

Donation protected
We are working in conjunction with the Monacan Indian Nation to improve the tribal garden, and create a catalogued inventory of the forest area of wild edibles traditionally utilized by the Monacan on their ancestral lands.  This work is vital in repairing the loss of culture for those divorced from their traditions by the forced acculturation imposed by the government.

The project is being spearheaded by tribal members & Admins from the Monacan Nation. This project is designed to empower the tribe, return culturally significant seeds, restore floodways lost or damaged, by generations of colonialism, and encourage the next generation of land and water protectors. The following areas will be our concentration:

EDUCATION - Reconnection with the ancestors, and the ability to pass on ancestral knowledge is vital for a living culture to flourish and continue on to the next generation. It will help with language, outdoors experience, and a sense of identity.

INDIGENOUS FOODWAYS - They represent livelihoods and age-old traditions that bring people together around food cultivation, production, and eating. And they serve as valuable entry points from which we can understand the vast landscape of cultural beliefs, customs, and traditions of Indigenous peoples around the world.

CULTURAL PRESERVATION -  Reimagination of traditional foodways, and connection to our past is essential for know who we are, and the direction a people can take for the future.  We will be working with the USDA, and several universities to reclaim stolen seeds and returning them to their rightful stewards.

MEDICINE GARDEN - traditional medicine is vital for physical and emotional wellbeing.

FOOD PANTRY - This project will supplement the tribes food pantry with culturally appropriate, healthy, and wholesome food choices.

VOLUNTEERS - Organizing, and aiding the tribe in the continuance of this work will be our commitment, but the largely grassroots, by the tribe, for the tribe for their future food sovereignty.
