On January 8, 2007, my mom, Elizabeth (Liz) Rodriguez, was diagnosed with Stage 2 T-4 breast cancer in her muscle chest wall. Immediately after, she was rushed into surgery and had a mastectomy. She underwent 6 months of chemotherapy and 6 months of radiation to help control the spreading, After 12 months of treatment, the signs of cancer had diminished and she went into remission. In 2011, she had Transflap Breast Reconstruction Surgery. In January 2016, another mass was found under her left arm and the doctor decided to keep a close eye on it and have it checked every 6 months. 8 Months down the road, it's August 2016, a tumor was found in her uterus, which was due to her medication - Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is meant to prevent the breast cancer from coming back but is known to lead to uterine cancers. The tumor was benign, and her Doctor's decided to completely remove her uterus. All was well, until November 2016, the mass they initially found turned out to be Triple Negative Stage 4 Breast Cancer which is a rare cancer and not common. Bone scan's, MRI, and a final biopsy confirmed it. It is agressively spreading to her shoulder, left axilla, and hip bone. This type of Cancer does not express 3 proteins- Estrogen Receptor (ER), Progesterone Receptor (PR), and Her2/NEU which in my mothers case means it can only be controlled by Chemotherapy and in some cases clinical trials of medication.
My mom has started chemo once again which unfortunately, she will be on for the rest of her life. It is very tiring and invasive and has taken a toll on our whole family- Emotionally and Financially. She will be living with this cancer for the rest of her life which has caused her to cut back significantly on her work hours. The chemotherapy comes with an onset of side effects which are affecting her currently, such as, nausea, stomach problems, weakness, inflamation of her joints (Arthritis), which, also, prevent her from working for long periods of time. Her medical bills will soon begin to pile and this is the first time my family has ever reached out to the public for assistance.
Elizabeth (Liz) Rodriguez, is the strongest woman I know, and I am proud that she is my mom and I have the privelage to call her MOM!
Please, we ask, if you are willing to help in any way possible, whether it be by donation and/or prayer, it will greatly be appreciated. My family and I, especially MOM, are thankful for the people around us, and all the love that has been shared. We won't be able to do it without you all!
