LOGLINE
Every year, in Japan, 150,000 children are torn away from a parent in the aftermath of a divorce. Now grown, this generation of young adults is demanding that the cycle of parental alienation ends with them.
日本では毎年15万人の子供たちが離婚により片方の親から引き離されている。彼らは成長し若年成人と成った今、片親引き離しの繰り返しを彼らの世代で終わらせることを望む。


SYNOPSIS
After an acrimonious divorce, Rita Shishikura’s husband forbade her from ever seeing their son again. The resulting alienation from her only child sends Rita’s life into a tailspin that eventually leads to a suicide attempt, and resuscitation in the Emergency Room. Through the process of recovery, Rita’s self-pity turns into a desire to see her son again, sending her on a journey that brings unexpected allies into her world. Along with her newfound friends - from a group striving to reunite children with their parents - Rita discovers both the will to live and her purpose in life.
リタ・シシクラは離婚後、夫に「息子と2度と会うな」と言われ、12年息子と会えていない。息子にもう一度会いたいという思いは、予期していなかった同志達を伴い、彼女を人生行路へと導く。離れ離れになった親とその子供を再び会わせることに努めている団体で見つけた新たな友人達と共にリエは生きる意志と目的を見出す。

Introduction
Parental Alienation: the process whereby one parent, through words or actions, knowlingly disrupts the relationship between their child and his or her other parent.

In the west, although progress has been made in the battle against parental abduction, the rise in international marriages means that divorce and custody battles ending in alienation and even abduction are not uncommon. Japan is listed by Child Abduction Recovery International as one of Asia’s top offenders, and the issue has long flown under the radar of moral outcry and social justice groups. Indeed, since 1992 an estimated three million children have been unable to meet or access a parent following divorce here, and every year 150,000 children are alienated from a parent.

The ultimate victims in these cases -the alienated children- are now young adults and have begun raising their voices against Japan’s archaic legal system. “Mommy or Daddy?” tells their stories. Their objective: end the vicious cycle of parental alienation in Japan so further generations never have to endure the same trauma.

Rock Bottom (Told in Japanese Anime) 日本語この後
The sound of sirens splits the night as an ambulance speeds through a Tokyo suburb. At the hospital, a stretcher carrying a barely conscious young woman races to the emergency room. The woman is Rita Shishikura, and through her blurred vision we watch the doctor in charge taking notes as the EMT updates them on the patient’s status, “Rice wine and an empty bottle of sleeping pills.”

Darkness. Rita Shishikura lies motionless on a hospital bed while a heart monitor beeps to the rhythm of the sun rising and falling, rising and falling. Eventually, she opens her eyes to see a doctor standing over her, “You’re lucky to be alive, young lady”. Rita stares at the sterile ceiling fan, which slows almost to a halt. Under her breath she mutters, “Luck? This is the opposite of luck! I can’t even manage to kill myself.” Shifting her gaze to a shaft of light coming through a gap in the curtain, she sees a memory in which she is playing with her one-year-old son on her lap. A tear rolls down her face. “Hizuki”, she whispers.

Turning a Corner
A middle-aged woman screws her face, and snarls, “Hizuki has a new mother now. He doesn’t even know you exist. Don’t ever call here again.” This is Rita’s mother-in-law. She came as part of the package with her husband, and as Rita walks now through the crowds along a bustling Tokyo sidewalk, memories play out of when her marriage broke down, and the mother-in-law’s role in keeping her son from her.

Rita turned to alcohol, and ended up working in Roppongi, Tokyo’s premier nightlife district. After work Rita drinks alone at home, she would act out as though her pillow were Hizuki. Most nights ended in tears or with her passing out, hugging the pillow tightly and, eventually, with the bottle of rice wine and sleeping pills that led her to the Emergency Room.

After hitting rock bottom, Rita undergoes a process of rehabilitation and therapy, allowing her once more to talk about Hizuki and share her memories of the year they had together. In turn she begins to talk about her relationship with her own mother, and vows to become the mother to Hizuki that he would be proud of. Rita leaves her job as a hostess ad her life begins to normalize; she takes a job teaching English and moves to a small apartment in a nicer part of town in preparation for a reunion with her son.


A Helping Hand
Through a high school friend, Rita is introduced to Ayumi, the founder of a non-profit organization that helps reunite children with their divorced parent. She promises to investigate Rita’s case and suggests that, in the meantime, Rita volunteers with Ayumi’s organization, to meet others who are experiencing the same trauma. One such person is Mike, a Canadian man offers to take her to Hizuki’s neighborhood, even if only to catch a glimpse of him.


Reunion
As a result of ongoing therapy sessions, and through her volunteer work – where she has progressed to the role of accompanying the official go-between to parent/child meetings – Rita comes to understand that she must reunite with her own mother. A meeting is arranged, and after fourteen years, the two spend an afternoon walking around their old neighborhood. Rita recalls the words of her ex-mother-in-law, “Your mother is Filipino and hot tempered. You know how unreliable she is. You’ll be much happier with your father”. She sobs at the memory, and asks her mother a question that’s been on her mind ever since Hizuki was taken away from her, “How did it make you feel when I chose dad over you?”

“I just fell apart. Completely and utterly. I think I blacked out. I still don’t remember how I made it home” Rita and her mother embrace.

A Voice for Change
By this time therapy has uncovered her own alienation from her mother – something that Rita had never spoken about – and she opens up to Ayumi, who in turn confides that she was abducted from her own mother (shown in snippets of anime). Ayumi calls on Rita to become a voice for alienated children, “You’ve grown so much, you have a connection with all of these children. You can see now who the most important people are in all of this”.

Ayumi encourages Rita to call on society to give an ear to what’s best for those caught between two parents. Spiritually reinvigorated, Rita seeks a more active role in Ayumi’s organization, and Ayumi suggests she accompany her and Mike to a seminar focusing on the issue of parental alienation in Japan. On a cold February morning, there is still frost on the Waseda University walkway as she and Mike make their way into the lecture theatre.

Ayumi is there, along with a gaggle of academics, legal professionals, and journalists. Professor Tanamura facilitates a discussion on the progress of a new bill in the Japanese Diet which, if passed, will criminalize parental abduction of children, and enforce visitation rights for non-custodial parents. The seminar touches on the politics behind the issue, and the several lobby groups that are holding up progress.

Hizuki
The taxi ride to the neighborhood where Hizuki lives is a nervous and silent one. A trembling Rita explains to Mike how terrified she is just being in this part of town. When they arrive, Rita looks out of the window and across the short footbridge that leads to the street where Hizuki lives, she is out of her depth, and nervous about being seen. “I crossed that bridge every day with Hizuki.”

Mike offers to accompany her into the neighborhood, but Rita hesitates, “Give me a second. I feel dizzy. I might faint.” Rita gathers herself, her emotions, her entire past almost, and readies herself. She looks again out of the car window before opening the door and stepping out onto the street. Mike follows her out and together they stand in front of the bridge. Memories of Hizuki fill her vision. She begins to walk, but after only a couple of steps, she stops.

“Hizuki doesn’t know I exist. All I’ve ever wanted is to cross this bridge again, and see him in his home, but I see now that I need to think about what’s best for Hizuki, not me. Someday he will discover that he has a mom, and I wait for the day that he crosses this bridge to come to me, when he’s ready to welcome me into his life.

Rita turns to face Mike, “We’re not done here, but it’s time to leave” the pair return to the taxi and she instructs the driver to head back to the station. As the bridge and Hizuki’s neighborhood disappear into the distance in the rear window behind her, a change comes over Rita, she is now empowered, and in control of her own destiny.

Free at Last
A five-year-old boy walks towards the station. He is holding hands with Rita, “Are you excited to see your daddy?” Rita asks him with a smile. The boy looks up at her, “Dad said he’s taking me to an aquarium today. I can’t wait to see the dolphins!”

They arrive at the turnstile where the boy’s father is waiting. The boy runs to him and they embrace before both looking over to Rita and waving, “See you at five!” Rita yells, bowing to the father, who is emotional but stoic.
The pair turn and head into the station as Rita watches on, with a look of contentment that she hasn’t felt in half a lifetime.

どん底
東京都心、サイレンが夜を切り裂き、猛スピードの救急車が病院の緊急治療室のドアの外で音を立てて止まる。救急車のドアが激しく開かれ、救急救命士が辛うじて意識のある若い女性を乗せたストレチャーを大急ぎで緊急治療室へ運び込む。リタ宍倉は微かに目を開き救急救命士が担当医に状況報告しているのをぼんやりと見ている。
「空の睡眠薬の瓶と日本酒」、担当医が詳細を書き留めると同時にリタは目を閉じる。
リタは病院のベッドで仰向けに寝ている。彼女が一人暗闇の中で横たわっている間、我々は彼女の心電図の音を聞いている。日が昇りその病室を照らし、夜が来ると暗くなった。何日か続き、最終的に彼女は意識を取り戻した。

 医師が彼女の前に立ち、「お嬢さん、助かりましたよ、あなたは運がいい。」と伝える。リタは病院の部屋の白い天井を見つめて、小さくつぶやいた。「運がいい？　どこが？　自分で死ぬことすらまともに出来ないなんて」。彼女は眠る為に目を閉じた。彼女の記憶：1歳になる彼女の息子を膝に乗せ遊んでいる。病院の枕に一筋の涙が落ちる。「ヒズキ」彼女は小さく呟く。

節目
リタは騒めいた東京の歩道で人混みの中を一人歩いている。数年間であった彼女の短い結婚生活はおぼろげだった。息子が生まれた時、彼女はついに長く待ち望んだ幸せを手に出来たと思った。しかし姑は彼女を気に入らなかった、姑と同じ家で生活を共にすることは耐え難いことであった。リタの離婚を知った時、姑と夫はこの先二度とリタが息子に会わないように面会を禁じた。継続的に息子との生活を取り戻すという試みは成功しなかった。姑は電話で「あなたはもうヒズキの母親ではありません。」「今は新しい母親がおり、幸せな家族を持っています。あの子はあなたの存在すら知りません、もう二度と電話してこないでください。」と言われた。
 それからの数年間は東京都心水商売の街六本木で働き、酒に溺れたぼんやりとした期間を過ごした。朝方仕事から戻り、ベッドの上で酒盛りを続ける。泥酔状態で枕を持ち上げ抱きしめる。小さなヒズキを抱きしめていた時の様に。そして枕をきつく抱きしめたまま意識を失う。

 リタの自殺未遂後、息子の記憶が彼女の中に継続的に蘇る。「今の自分を見たらヒズキはどう思うだろう。」息子が誇れるような母親になりたいと考え始めるまで、この思いはより大きくなっていった。リタはガールズバーのホステスを辞め、英語教師になった。フィリピン人の母親とカソリックスクールでの英語教育がこの特別な能力を彼女に与えた。リタの生活は徐々に正常化していった。英語教師で得られる給料は東京でより環境の良い場所に移る助けになった。再び息子と会う準備として、アパートを整理し、料理の腕を磨いた。

 差し伸べられる手
高校時代の友人がリタの状況を知り、助けになるかもしれない人物を彼女に紹介する。リタは直ぐに東京の中心街にあるハチ公像の前で同じ年頃の女性を見つける。離婚した親とその子供を再会させる手助けをしている非営利団体の創設者アユミは昼食にリタを誘った。アユミはリタに彼女の団体は引き離された親側と子供側の両方で溢れかえっていると伝える。彼女はリタが再びヒズキと会える選択肢を見つける手助けをすることを約束した。しばらくの間、アユミはリタをボンラティアとして彼女の学校に招き、今現在同じ経験をしている人々に会わせた。初日にリタは英語で3人の子供達の勉強を教える。彼女はまた子供達と監護権のない親との面会の管理を学ぶ。
 再会
14年間の別居後、リタは自分の母親と再会した。二人は抱きしめ合いそしてリタが通っていた保育園と家族として暮らしていた最初の家の周辺を歩いた。
その公園を通った時、思い出があふれ出してくる。両親の離婚後、父親は父親か母親かどちらかを選べとリタに迫った。祖母はその数週間前から父親を選ぶようにリタを説得していた。「あなたの母親は頼りない。彼女はフィリピン人で、すぐ感情的になる。お前は父親と暮らした方が幸せになれる。」リタがどちらを選ぶかを求められた時、彼女自身も「パパ」と答えを出していた。長い間気にかかっていた思い、リタはやっと勇気を振り絞り母親に「父を選んだ時どんな気持ちだったの」と聞いてみた。
 止めどなく涙を流し、母はもう自分の娘の生活に関与できないと知らされた時の話を伝えた。「目の前が真っ暗になり、どうやって家に帰ったかも覚えていない。」リタはヒズキから引き離されてから頻繁に起こっていた感情を思い出しながら母を抱きしめた。

 変革を求める声
リタは以前にもまして片親引き離しの悪循環に情熱的に向き合っている。日本では毎年15万人の子供たちが母親もしくは父親から引き離されており、同時に親権を持つ親が親権を持たない親から養育費を受け取ることはほとんどないという事実をアユミに聞かされた時、リタは衝撃を受けた。

 冷たい2月の朝、リタとマイクは早稲田大学の歩道をアユミの後ろをついていっていた。レクチャールームに続く道、3人はジャーナリスト、大学の教授そして立法者の集団を目にする。彼らは皆日本における片親引き離し問題に焦点を合わせたセミナーの為に集まった人達だ。タナムラ教授は、日本の国会で進められている新しい法案における議論を促進している。もしこの法案が通れば、親からの子供の連れ去りを防げ、監護権のない親に対する面会権を後押しできる。
セミナー後、3人はタナムラ教授と共に早稲田の歩道まで歩いた。なかなか進展を見せないこの問題に耐え切れずマイクは、彼の息子と密かに会っていることを教授に話す。タナムラ教授はマイクの状況を理解した上で頷き「特別利益団体が当該法案の進展を妨げている」と説明した。「片親引き離しのトラウマを経験した子供としてリタやアユミのような人々が声を挙げない限り、子供を引き取った側と引き離された側の親との対立問題は変わらない。」タナムラ教授は、引き取った側と引き離された側の対立ではなくお互いが親権問題とは本来どのようなものかを見つめ直す方向に変えることで3人の手助けを試みている。

 ヒズキ
駅で震えながらリタはマイクに抱き付き、そこにいることがどれだけ彼女を不安にしているかを説明した。マイクはタクシーを呼び、乗り込んだ。彼らがリタの息子が住んでいる家へ近づくに連れ、リタは黙り込んだ。車が彼女の息子の家へ到着した時に、ヒズキがいるのではないかとその家の窓を見た。確信が持てず、助けを求めリタはマイクを見た。「自分も君と一緒に行こうか？」「ええ、でもちょっと待って、頭がふらふらして倒れそう。」

 リタはその窓をもう一度見てから数回深呼吸をした。彼女は手を伸ばしドアを開け、車から降りてその家に向かうが足を止める。マイクが彼女の後ろから支えるように彼女の肩に手をかける。「ヒズキは私の存在を知らない。私の望みはあの子の人生にもう一度関わり合いたいということ、でもそれはあの子にとって最良のことなのかな。」リタはその家を見つめ、そして目を閉じた。「ママはあなたを愛しているよ。」そう口にすると、涙が零れ落ちた。
 まだ震えていたが、吹っ切れた気持ちでリタは車に戻った。「いつかあの子に会います。それが正しいことだという確証が欲しい。今この場で会いに行ったらあの子にはこの現実を受け止めきれないかもしれないから。」彼女は、運転手に駅へ戻るように伝え、思いを込めて手を窓に置き、通りを下って行った。
