On May 15th , 2018 my family and I's life were turned upside down. It is on that day that my wife of 16 years, the mother of our 3 wonderful children (Zachary, Blake, & Cecelia) was diagnosed with a rare form of bladder cancer. The road ahead of us is long but together as a family we will overcome because "Mommy will beat Cancer!!!"
After repeated UTI's, a scope was done of her bladder and bladder stones were found. On may 8th a procedure was done to remove the stones from her bladder. Due to the amount of stones only about 50% of the stones were removed at that time and the same procedure was scheduled for May 17th to remove the rest of the stones. In a conversation with her Urologist after the stone removal procedure, he expressed his concern with us over the appearance of what was removed. The stones were then sent to the lab for analysis which brings us to her diagnosis on May 15.
The diagnosis was Adenocarcinoma of the bladder. So rare of a cancer that less then 2% of malignant cancers of the bladder fall into this category. That added to the fact that over 80% of all bladder cancers appear in men not women and we have a very very rare occurrence, so rare in fact that there is pretty much no data on how to treat it.
The situation was compounded again on May 29th when a PET scan showed that the cancer had metastasized into the lymph nodes on either side of her bladder. The first option to treat her was to remove her bladder and then hopefully remove the cancer. With the results of the PET scan that was no longer an option.
The decision was then made that Step 1 of the treatment would be to attack the cancer with Chemotherapy which we began on June 18/June 19. Her Chemo will last for 8 weeks and comprise of 4 drugs over 2 days every 2 weeks. The hope is to shrink the cancer to a point that Chemo/Radiation/Surgery will take it out of her body.
She has taken a medical leave of absence from work and i have taken a leave as well. My time is now spent helping and comforting her as well as providing for our 3 kids. All proceeds from this fund will help us in meeting our day to day financial obligations, providing for as normal of a childhood for our children as possible throughout her treatment, and filling in the holes with traveling expenses, medical costs, and all other expenses needed to make sure that "Mommy Beats Cancer!!!"
The outpouring of support from family, friends, co-workers, and the community has been overwhelming. Jessica and I would like to thank each and every one of you from the bottoms of our hearts for your words of encouragement and generosity!! May God bless you all!!
