Last week, one of my cats got hit by a car. She had a severely fractured pelvis that required surgery in order to continue living a happy, healthy life. This was a surgery I could not afford, but I elected to go through with it. I couldn't not do it. Here's the reason why:

Three years ago, my mother nearly died in a car accident. Her pelvis, like Momma Cat's pelvis, was also broken. She also broke her spine in several places. She nearly died, but by the grace of God, she is still in my life. She had to be in a halo brace for nearly a year. For more than six months, she was bedridden, and my father had to wheel her outside to bathe her with a sponge because she couldn't do it herself. Every day for six months they took care of eachother, and expended an amount of physical and emotional energy that I cannot even begin to fathom and leaves me floored with respect and love.

I could not help but look at my cat, the mother to my other cat, Purrf, who I also love with all my heart, and not think about my own mother. there was no question about what I had to do.

My parents raised me to be a compassionate and vulnerable human being, and I'll admit that I am crying as I type this out. Love is a powerful emotion. It's what makes us human even if it often involves putting ourselves under great stress and burden. I have found myself in a position of extreme financial uncertainty in order to save a life I care dearly about, and I am hoping that that kind of altruism is a form of karma that will extend itself to those who understand what it means to do things that are beyond yourself for the beings that you love.
