I never thought the day would ever come when I would need to ask for financial help, after raising my 5 children on my own as a single mother and always being able to figure it out on my own but due to the gravity of my son's situation, I have no other option at this time. I have created this GoFundMe because I'll need financial support for the next few weeks.
On June 12th 2024, I received a terrifying text from my son who is currently serving in the US Army that he had become incredibly ill during a deployment overseas and they were going to transport him to Landstuhl Germany from Poland for treatment. Upon arriving he was placed in the ICU and started him on continuous dialysis because he was having issues with his heart, kidneys and lungs. They had no answers as far as a diagnosis was concerned but they decided to keep him sedated and transport him to Walter Reed with a specialized group of Doctors to keep him stable, for more intense testing and treatment. My son arrived back in the US at the early hours on the 15th of June.
I received a call from a Military Social worker informing me of the extraction back to the US and someone else was supposed to contact me to assist with transport, lodging etc to Walter Reed but to this day no one has followed up with me. He finally was able to text me again in the early hours of June 15th and stated he was in ICU, under infectious protocol, having a kidney and skin biopsy and that he was going to get a plasma transfusion but he was unfocused and out of it and I was worried about him having an advocate with him. I had no other way to travel so I borrowed the money for a one way ticket and flew to D.C. and took an Uber to Walter Reed.
They ran a battery of tests and were able to stabilize him in the hospital by treating all the symptoms but once he was stable the Doctors made it clear that if my son had gone through another 24 hours without any treatment he would have died because his system was so overwhelmed and full of toxins. Currently we are working with a strong possible diagnosis. We should be in the final steps of finally confirming today or tomorrow. I will not disclose his diagnosis at this time for that is his story to tell but it is a chronic, lifelong condition that can thankfully be managed with the right treatment.
The problem currently is that they need to rule out other similar conditions because the infusion treatment considered the best treatment for his conditions is basically chemotherapy but if this is one of the related illnesses, it could actually be made much worse by selecting the wrong treatment and then his system would begin fighting itself again and shut down. The goal at this time is to get him in remission before deciding on next steps. The way that would work is that they give him his infusion treatment, in two doses divided by two weeks. Because these treatments are so harsh on the body they could have a number of side effects that we can not be aware of at this time and a big concern is that he had an allergic reaction when given plasma infusions.
As many of you know I work 6 days a week, at two separate jobs, sometimes up to 16hrs a day. I have many financial responsibilities riding on my shoulders and having my son in critical conditions in the hospital in another state has completely thrown everything out of balance for me. I am fortunate enough that the Army was able to put me up in a Fisher House in the base and I can just walk to the hospital to be with my son. Also, my best friend Melissa dropped everything to drive up to Washington DC/Maryland to meet me here and has been paying for everything (food, toiletry, etc.) and making sure I take care of myself during this horrible time.
I am now in touch with an Army POC who has been great and is attempting to assist with other community services and donations, such as gift cards for food and he has stated that he feels they will help get a plane ticket back when the time comes. So that would help with my needs while I am here. In the meantime though, I still have to keep up with my house bills, car notes, insurance, utilities, etc. In short all the things I generally take care of in my home and for my other children but since I have already missed a week of work and am currently looking at 1 or 2 more, I am falling further behind by the day but I am scared of leaving him before he has his infusions and then anyother emergency arising while I am in FL and not being able to come back.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. If you can donate, any amount would help and if you can't please consider sharing my link, please keep us in your prayers. I appreciate your help more than I could ever say. May God Bless you and your family and again, thank you for your help from the bottom of my heart.
