Mollie Needs Life-Saving Kidney Surgery

Donation protected
My name is Alayna and I’m here to humbly ask for your help to save my best friend. Mollie is a five-year-old Pembroke Welsh corgi. She’s sassy, clever, and steals the heart of everyone she meets. My fiancé Jon and I adopted Mollie as a puppy and I’d never seen such joy in his eyes as when he first held her. When we lost Jon in a tragic car accident with our whole family involved, it was a miracle that she survived. Jon’s memory lives on in Mollie and I cannot lose her too. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read Mollie’s story.

After the accident, Mollie and I worked hard to make new memories to try to accept the new shape of our family. We love swimming during annual pup swims, summer boat rides, big hikes, treats & toys, and even had an East Coast summer adventure. There’s no doubt that Mollie has had a great life, but 5 years is not long enough- I desperately need your help.

On January 16th, after acting lethargic and going to potty more than normal, she was diagnosed with a UTI at the ER. On January 18th, after not eating and still acting lethargic, she took a trip to Blue Pearl and was diagnosed by ultrasound with a kidney mass. I was told it looked like a renal carcinoma and surgery to remove the tumor and her kidney was the only option. Surgery, hospitalization, and care was quoted at $9,000-$12,000. During this time we also learned her platelet level was dangerously low, making surgery not possible at this time. Devastating doesn't begin to describe how I felt receiving all of that news.

On January 19th, I took her to another animal ER for a second opinion. They performed additional scans and speculated that she could possibly have a kidney stone or obstruction versus kidney cancer. While this is potentially positive news, the unfortunate catch is that her platelet levels continue to dramatically drop and now she has a fever. The doctors are concerned she has immune mediated thrombocytopenia, where her own immune system attacks and destroys her platelets. They are working to correct this with immune-suppressing drugs, but she is requiring hospitalization and close monitoring.

The platelet treatment can take up to two weeks to take effect, and only THEN she can have an exploratory surgery to remove the obstruction or biopsy the mass. I've been quoted $5000-6000 alone for kidney removal, but Mollie will require the exploratory surgery first, hospitalization, blood transfusions, meds, and supportive care. So far, I've paid $3,800 for her three ER visits, and she will be in the hospital for another few days to monitor her platelets and watch her response to the meds. They are also ruling out tick-borne illness that can lower platelets and cause fever without raising her white blood cell count.

I want to do all I can to give Mollie the best chance at living until a ripe old age by my side. I appreciate anything you can give to help my sweet baby girl. It means so much to me.
