Help Mojocare clean up Java; funding waste management plan

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, a third of which is designed to be used only once. Less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in oceans, rivers and lakes annually.
Globally, Indonesia is the worlds second largest contributor of marine plastic litter after China. Contributing 10% of plastic leaked into the ocean every single year (sea circular country profile statistics).
With low socio-economic status, non existent facilities and a lack of education being the main contributing factors towards the pollution levels.
For context, only 50 years ago Indonesians would package their consumables in banana leaves which after use were thrown on the ground, leaving no environmental impact because they were biodegradable. Now, with Western influence over the last 50 years and the introduction of plastic packaging, the habitual reflex of throwing the packaging on the ground is still firmly embedded in the culture.
With the rapid increase in tourism numbers across Indonesia it has become apparent that the country’s facilities cannot handle the growing demand for responsible plastic disposal and management.
With limited action being taken from the Indonesian government or corporations, tourism organisations like Mojosurf have decided to take the fight to the community level by creating Mojocare. Through outreach educational programs and investing in facility development, Mojocare aims to:
- Reduce the impact of plastic pollution
- Raise awareness in local communities
- Provide funding to local environmentally conscious organisations through targeted consciences travel initiatives
A contribution from you will go towards:
- Developing a fully operational waste bank in East Java (Estimated budget $80,000)
- 1 year local collection and education team salaries for 5 staff (Estimated budget $26,000)
- Providing reusable water bottles, water fountains, eco shopping bags and educational programs for schools (Estimated budget $4,000)
