Help Stop Merri-bek’s Cat Curfew
Moggies of Merri-bek is a grassroots group of local residents standing up for fair, evidence-based, and humane cat management in our community.
Council will vote soon on a proposed cat curfew, and many residents still don’t realise it’s on the table. We’re raising funds to reach them before the final decision.
The Council vote is on Wednesday, 12 November 2025.
Until then, we need to get the word out - fast.
Why We’re Raising Funds
We’re not a business or registered organisation - just passionate locals, advocates, and subject-matter experts pooling resources to ensure every voice is heard.
So far, we’ve funded everything ourselves - a public forum, print materials, website and social media advertising - but with your help, we can reach many more residents before the vote.
Every dollar raised will go directly toward:
• Facebook and Instagram ads to alert residents and link them to our petition
• Printing flyers and posters through the community
We’re aiming to raise around $2,000 to fund outreach from now until the Council meeting.
Why It Matters
A cat curfew might sound simple, but it risks:
• Ignoring the real issue - unowned and semi-owned cats that curfews don’t reach
• Penalising responsible owners who already desex and microchip their pets
• Disadvantaging people who simply can’t afford costly cat-proofing or custom enclosures, especially renters (who need to redo it each time they move) and low-income households
• Harming older rescue cats who struggle with full confinement
• Creating tension and confusion among neighbours
• Fostering hostility toward cats seen outdoors, increasing the risk of trapping, harassment and vigilante behaviour by cat haters
We all want to protect wildlife, but education and community cat programs work better than fines and fear.
Every Dollar Helps
If you believe in humane, community-driven solutions - not blanket curfews - please chip in.
Every $50 we raise buys another day of social media advertising to reach more residents.
Even small donations help us reach more locals before the final vote.
Donate, share, and help us make sure Merri-bek chooses compassion over control.
Thank you from all of us (and our moggies).
