Moe Docherty Memorial Bench & Youth Soccer Fund

Last July, we lost a great father, brother, and friend to many, Maurice “Moe” Docherty.  Since Moe was very influential to youth soccer in the Hill Country, we would like to honor him with a granite memorial bench and a donation in his name to Granite Country Youth Soccer Association.

Moe came to Marble Falls/Horseshoe Bay in 1986 to manage The Boardwalk and later went on to own the restaurant as well as others in the area where he had such a positive impact on the community over the years.

When Moe first arrived, he immediately sought out the few of us in Marble Falls that were playing soccer.  Our core group was in high school and had been playing for years, but with no real formal instruction.  Moe taught proper Scottish/English football, so we began to develop our skills and play true soccer.  Before there was an opportunity to be affiliated with the school or a UIL program, he would help us arrange games against other schools in the area, mostly in Austin, where the group from Marble Falls was always competitive.

Moe had a true passion for life, and this was seen through his love of soccer.  He was originally from Glasgow, Scotland where he grew up and remained a Celtic FC supporter.  He passed that spirit along to many of us and even arranged trips to see Celtic compete in Scotland.  He also arranged games for his team and friends to play other friends of his around the states.

Moe brought so many people together through his efforts and the good times spent at his restaurants and bars. He had a gift for telling stories which would often be shared and retold many times over. We were not only lucky to have known Moe, but also to have gained the friendships with each other that we would not have had without him.

In memory of Moe’s life and what he has done for soccer in Marble Falls, we are having a granite memorial bench made that will be placed at the Marble Falls High School or The Greens soccer complex in Marble Falls; the same area where Moe taught us the game and where that legacy continues today.  We also hope to raise enough to make a donation to Granite Country YSA in honor of Maurice Docherty.  Please consider contributing and sharing this message with all who might be interested in being a part of our efforts. All donations, large or small, will help and are much appreciated.
