Help Build-Out Sam Beller's Dream House

Donation protected

David and Kelly Beller purchased their starter home on Dearborn Drive in the year of 1997, and moved in a few days before their third child was born. For those who know the Beller family, what began as a starter home quickly evolved into a hub of hospitality. With two parents, four children, 24/7 nursing staff who’ve become family, therapists, church small groups, prayer gatherings, massive “Slammin Sam Jam” birthday parties…. It has been a home that welcomes life, in the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Part of the journey of the Dearborn home was that as Sam developed into the 28 year old man he is today, the house developed with him. As he grew older, the garage became a stock room of medical supplies, the hall coat closet became wheelchair storage and a passage for a ceiling track which allows for easier mobility from bed to the shower. Throughout the decades, the Dearborn home has molded to an environment which has allowed Sam to thrive. But— there was always a dream.

David and Kelly, two creative types, David an architect and Kelly an expert in hospitality, always knew that Dearborn was only the beginning of their dream. As the years progressed, the raising and launching of four children, including keeping Sam healthy and thriving, took front and center and the starter-home became home-home. Being the second eldest of the four children, I can say with all my heart that these three Bellers are so deserving of something truly incredible as they enter into the “Sam-Nester” life phase.

Growing up, my parents made it clear that there were financial choices being made to invest in our futures that meant putting other dreams on hold. Saving to put their kids through college. Paying off ALL debt— house, cars, ALL. A wedding. Ducks in a row, all the while, keeping “their village” front and center, giving everything and sometimes having no personal boundaries in order to be present in churches, small groups, friends, their children’s and children’s friends lives. Choices. An incredibly beautiful Beller legacy has formed.

And then, David and Kelly felt the leading of the Lord that 2021, a wild year in the housing market, would be the year for them to transition out of Dearborn and into a new home. Enter The Hills home. It had been a stressful process of losing offers and losing hope of finding the house of their dreams until The Hills home popped up on the market. We were on a family trip in San Diego and my parents’ realtor gave them a virtual tour of a beautiful architecturally designed open home in McKinney, TX. We all knew it was the one. They put down an offer. Then, in a moment of uncertainty, this low-risk family prayed and as soon as the word “Amen” was spoken- David received a text saying “Ok, are you sitting?? Your offer won. You got the house!!”

It was a holy moment.

As they prepare to sell the Dearborn house, they embark on a journey of modifying their dream home to fit the needs of Sam Beller first. The modifications that took shape over the years at Dearborn are all needing to happen in the next month, a much faster timeline than before. Insurance was supposed to support a small budget modification, but not much and that has gotten stuck in paperwork.

Here is a list of what will need to happen before they can all move in:

-Ramps for accessibility into and throughout the house: $19,700

-Hand Rails and no-fall rail next to ramps: $3500

-Accessibility in Sam's bathroom + shower table and niche in wall to store: $2000

-A ceiling track to lift and carry Sam from bed to bath: $4900

-Nurse’s prep area to serve as a work station for Sam’s daily medical routine: $8000

If you have ever been impacted by the hospitality-cheese board-laughter-music-conversation kind of love that David, Kelly, and Sam have given over the years, we ask that you prayerfully give towards this huge cause. They are so deserving of this blessing.

We know this is no small ask. Quite honestly, the high price point for these "Sam modifications" came as a shock to the family as well. But we knew that the blessing and peace of God marked this story, and so we are believing big.  At 28 years old, Sam will make this his home and he is as big deal of a deal as ever. We are thinking of this as an investment in the dream for a landing place for Sam’s adult life, one full of function and dignity, and also an investment in the dreams of David and Kelly, who we all KNOW will be so ready to host you again in their dream home.
