Docomomo Sudan - Support for Creative Awards
Donation protected
We plan to launch three awards for creative writing, material innovation, and photography that will foster critical engagement and reflection on Sudan’s architecture. These awards will provide a platform for talented individuals to share their ideas and perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of our time. Below is a little bit about us.
In 2021, Modern Sudan Collective established Docomomo Sudan, a chapter of Docomomo International, a non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. Our founding members were motivated to research and document neglected modern architectural heritage, a task made more urgent by the devastating war that erupted in 2023.
We utilize an interdisciplinary approach to research and disseminate knowledge on the modern history of Sudan by adopting an architectural lens that enables the re-narrating of history from new perspectives. We have started to create an archive that documents architecture through research, oral histories, photography, and architectural representation. Our heritage monitoring efforts involve regular assessments of architectural sites to identify threats such as neglect and war damage. The data supports multiple advocacy efforts.
We are committed to nurturing the next generation of architectural researchers. We offer workshops and mentorship opportunities to empower young researchers and develop their critical thinking and research skills. We further support their academic endeavors by assisting with research, publication, and conference presentations.
To ensure the sustainability of our work, we are hosting a fundraiser which will allow us to support young researchers, encourage Sudanese creatives and continue documentation work on heritage sites in the face of on-going destruction.
