Mobile Literacy Library

Introducing Little Literacy Library, a heart-warming initiative aimed at providing access to educational materials for children in marginalised communities in Kolkata, India. The vision for this project was first conceived by Nikitah Rajput-Ray (Junior Ambassador at the NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health) in 2018. After raising funds through a children's workshop on Diwali and spreading kindness, a dream of a mobile library became a reality, with its inauguration and set-up taking place in March-April 2022.
Since then, two libraries have been set up and blossomed in the Chetla Lock Gate and RG Kar slums. These spaces are managed by the library Assistants and Librarians, along with the support of an Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) teacher, as part of a scheme by the Indian government. Together, they ensure that every child in these communities has access to books and educational resources. Our libraries offer bilingual literacy materials in English and Bengali, catering to children between the ages of 5 and 15 years.
At the core of our mission is the belief that education is a fundamental right for every child. We strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn and grow. Through this initiative. We hope to ignite the untapped potential of the next generation and collaboratively integrate English language proficiency with education in food, nutrition, health, and life skills. To motivate and engage the children, we provide nutritious food monthly and free meals whenever our Mobile Teaching Kitchen (MTK) unit visits a particular slum area.
Our commitment extends beyond Kolkata. Soon, we plan to replicate this enriching environment for children in rural Punjab. Currently, these libraries collectively support 45 children, offering English language education, fun activities, and nutritious food and promoting healthy eating habits, including WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) principles for overall well-being.
This year marks the successful completion of the first year of the Chetla Library in March, positively impacting the learning and development of 25 children in the slum. The RG Kar library is equally transformative, benefiting 16 children. Our goal is to reach out to more children in both these slums and other areas where our support is needed.
We invite you to join hands with us in our noble mission. Let's collaborate to craft a brighter future for the children of tomorrow.
