Mfantsipim School is the first secondary school established by the Methodist Church on 3rd April 1876. Since then, Mfantsipim has educated young boys from across the country and has offered a wholistic education centred on excellent academics, extracurricular activities including a variety of sports and a strong moral compass. It is therefore not surprising that Mfantsipim alumni have held senior positions in Ghana across government, industry and sports. These include 3 vice presidents and national football players and athletes. Perhaps, Mfantsipim’s best known alum is the late Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary General who was known for his strong moral compass, no doubt shaped from his time at Mfantspim.
Such was Mfantsipim’s contribution to sports that, on the occasion of it’s centenary in 1976, the then Head of State of Ghana, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, decided to build a sports complex for the school. Unfortunately, he was overthrown prior to it being completed. The uncompleted facilities were however used by Mfantsipim and other Schools within Cape Coast for training and hosting of sports events. Over time the facilities have deteriorated and need to be replaced. Despite these challenges, Mfantsipim continues to be strong in sports and at the just ended Central Regional Inter Schools Sports Competition, Joseph Kwofie a first-year student broke the 100 and 20m records that had stood for 30years.
3 years ago, the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) embarked on building new sports facilities for the school and till date have constructed a Basketball Court and a football field. The next phase of work involves reconstruction of the main stadium, including tartan tracks, spectator stands and changing rooms at a cost of just over $1M USD. MOBA has been able to raise half of this from its alumni group and would be grateful for your support in raising the total amount.
Your contribution would go a long way in raising the next generation of global leaders and change agents across governments, industry and sports.
