Stella and her Road to Recovery

I would like to start off by saying Stella is a young Clydesdale, she is 4 turning 5 on July 26th. She has so much life to live and that’s why we are here now, sharing this sad accident. 

On Saturday July 9th, 2022 as soon as I was leaving my shift at work I got a call from the barn owner and she begun to tell me that my worst fear has come true. Stella had severely injured herself and would be needing immediate vet attention.

Stella had somehow gotten tangled up in the fencing of her paddock and struggled so intensely that she had cut her skin right down to the bone on her left hind leg. Meaning she has cut all of her tendons off and had potentially cut into her joint. At this point there were two main options. Euthanize or send her to OVC to get their opinion. The first vet told me that she was surprised they even got Stella up and back down to the barn. I could see she was still fighting so I wasn’t about to give up on her.

with the help of a wonderful barn family we carefully loaded Stella onto the trailer and took her to OVC. Upon arrival, they X-rayed her leg and it showed that the wire missed her joint by an literal inch. One more inch of cutting into her and she would not have been able to recover.

As of right now the vets have told me her wounds are starting to show signs of infection. This is what they expected but she might have to be put under anesthesia to give it all a really good clean.

it’s going to be a long and slow recovery if we get this infection under control. It will take months of antibiotics, bandage changes, stall rest and special care to get Stella back to the beautiful girl we all know and love. Stella is still fighting, I am still fighting for her and I hope you will keep her in your thoughts and prayers and join this long journey to get Stella back to living her best life.
