Help Heroic Doctor Fight COVID Outbreak in Somalia
We are not powerless during this crisis: We can directly impact life-saving measures -- and this is how!
Our dear friend Dr. Deqo Mohamed has mobilized 100+ volunteer Somali health professionals and medical students to conduct essential trainings and COVID patient triage in Somalia. Through her initiative called the Hagarla Institute, Deqo's volunteers will reach more than 5,000 people in person, the majority of whom are displaced persons living in overcrowded camps with no access to basic health care. They are at exceptionally high risk of contracting, spreading, and dying from the virus. Deqo and her volunteers are working tirelessly around the clock to save as many lives as possible and to contain the outbreak's mounting force.
These volunteer medical personnel are efficient, resourceful, and strategic -- but they need immediate resources and supplies to do their work. With a severely under-resourced health care system -- only 20 ICU beds for a population of 15 million -- they face a raging wildfire armed with a cup of water.
These are precarious financial times, but we can each give generously within our means. Contributions to date have ranged from $5 to $1,000. Every dollar makes possible critical outreach and the purchase and distribution of essential supplies including medication, soap, and bags of water.
During this holy season of Ramadan, we hope that you will consider this opportunity to offer sadaqah. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by May 31. Will you help us reach it?
About Dr. Deqo Mohamed: She is an OB-GYN and the founder of the Hagarla Institute in Somalia, a public health initiative focused on maternal health and capacity-building for medical professionals. For over a decade, she served as CEO of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation and managed operations of Hope Village, a Somali displaced persons camp of over 90,000 people which had its own 300-bed hospital and two schools. Dr. Deqo was a Yale Greenberg World Fellow and received Yale University’s Chubb Fellowship, an honorary doctorate from Chatham University, and Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year Award. She has spoken at the Clinton Global Initiative, TEDWomen, and BET’s Black Girls Rock Awards. In short, Dr, Deqo Mohamed is the REAL DEAL.
Believe in the impact of this work. And please support it.
Thank you for your generosity. We wish you safety and good health.
