Dougie is a exceptional man who has endured so much in his life. He has Cerebral Palsey. He is the oldest living person with Cerebral Palsey in Indiana. He is currently living in a private 24 hour senior care home and he is so happy. His care at the Moses Caregivers home has brought back the Dougie everyone knows and loves. Dougie is about to run out of money and no one wants to have him moved to a nursing home. Please help Dougie stay home where he is loved and cared for like he should be. He doesn't deserve to go to a nursing home where he will be neglected. Please read his story and donate so Dougie can stay home!
James Douglas Upchurch better known as "Dougie" is 75 years old and has Cerebral Palsey. He has the mentality of a 9 year old. Dougie went to school and did the best he could,his parents took him out of school at the age of 15 when his coach slapped him in the face because Dougie didn't understand what he wanted him to do. His parents would not allow that to happen. His parents were both loving and caring and took care of Dougie until they passed away in 1974 and 2004 . At the time of his mothers death his cousin Valerie and her husband were given authority to care for Dougie. They tried putting Dougie in an assisited living home but he lost 25 pounds in 3 months. He was not used to being alone . He always had family around him. Valerie and Paul took Dougie home and took care of him. After 10 years Dougie's physcial condidtion was going down and they no longer could care for him. They live in a 2 story home and could no longer get Dougie up and down the stairs. Both of them were aging themselves so it was harder and harder to care for him.
Assisted living was not an option so they checked into nursing homes and thought they had found a good one. However it proved to be one of the worst things that would happen to Dougie.
Daily he was neglected. They would leave him unbathed they didn't help him eat and it was so difficult for Dougie to feed himself he usually had more food on himself than he had eaten. They would leave his urinal next to his food on his table. They would leave him in dirty linens. Valerie would help him eat and clean him up when she was there. She said it would take forever to just find someone to get a washcloth for Dougie.
After a couple weeks Valerie saw a horrible rash all over his private areas. He had sores from being left in the
bed or sitting in his wheelchair. It was very painful for Dougie. Of course she reported it to the nurses and doctor but nothing was done. Valerie reported this to the authorites also but nothning was done. She said she could see Dougies soul just withering away.
Valerie immediatley started looking for somewhere else for Dougie and found "Moses Caregivers" which is a private home with just 7 residents. This is an actual HOME. It is a duplex opened up in betweend and is set up just as your own home would be. Dougie moved in on October 15th 2014. This has changed Dougie's life. He has his own bedroom, all home cooked meals and has 2 to 3 caregivers on duty always. The people there actually care for him and about him. The residents all have their meals together in a real family dinning rom! The cook will make Dougie things he wants to eat. They celebrate all the holidays with the familys of the residents. It is one big family. They just had Santa here again to see everyone. Dougie told the caregivers at the home that he loved the circus, so they set up a circus for him with a popcorn machine and had games for him and the other residents to play. He truly felt like he was at the circus! Every one there feels as if it their own home where birthdays are celebrated (even if the residents family can't be there). It is a wonderful palce where life is celebrated. They go outside in the warm weather on the front porch. They celebrate 4th of July and have cookouts. Just like you would if you were at home.
At Moses caregivers they encourage him and comfort him. They know this is the place they will live out the rest of their days. They treat them with respect and love. They are not ignored or left in their rooms alone. They feel everyone deserves their dignity.
Dougie had some money left by his parents to care for him but his money has run out. He gets $1100.00 a month and his care is $5000.00 at Moses caregivers, which is less than most nursing homes and Dougie gets the care, and attention all in a loving enviroment. He enjoys his life there. He is always laughing and talking!
Please help us keep Dougie there. He deserves this.

I have been working for Moses Caregivers for 6 years now taking care of the elderly. One resident in particular who stands out is Dougie. As a 75 year old dealing with Cerebral palsy he has pushed past many expectations. Dougie has both physical and mental barriers as a result of the disorder, but a heart of gold.
Before coming to Moses Caregivers, a private senior care home, Dougie live in a nursing home, When Dougie moved in he was very withdrawn he would not participate in activities or games with the other residents and staff. Simple things such as open windows would upset him. Dougie was set in his ways of just sitting in his chair and being served his meals. This was a trait developed in the nursing home where he would be left in his wheelchair alone at a table for the day.
Since living at Moses Caregivers, Dougie has changed and for the better. Thanks to the dedicated staff on top of his loving family’s interaction Dougie has come out of his shell. Dougie now walks more often with the assistance of a walker and staff members Dougie is a dedicated BINGO player never missing a game. When the weather is warm he even allows the staff to open his windows and take him outside Something Dougie wouldn’t have even considered doing in the past. Moses Caregivers is Dougie’s home, he calls all of us his family his cousins. Dougie looks out for the wellbeing of the other residents as well and always prays for them when they aren’t feeling well
As one of Dougie’s full-time caregivers, I cannot imagine him living anywhere else. This could be an all too scary possibility for Dougie, though as his finances are running out and his insurance does not cover private care. To imagine him living in a nursing home is terrifying. They are terribly understaffed and so many of our great seniors are treated as a room number. Dougie has come so far and leaving his home for a nursing home would cause him to regress to be left in a wheelchair starring at four white walls, listening to call lights beep for hours on end is torture for anyone. Please help Dougie stay with us. Any amount of a donation will help.

Dougie as his family calls him is an old soul. Everyone that knows him has been blessed by his childlike innocence and profound wisdom. He has a knack of saying what needs to be said in his own Dougie way. Dougie is innocent and was led to Moses care givers by God. Moses is the only place besides when he was home with Valerie that he thrived and is treated like family. Please help Dougie live out the rest of his days in love, peace and respect.

Please allow me to begin by saying how fortuate I am to know Dougie. I have know him for many years and have seen many changes in his personality.
When Dougie was in the nursing home I visited him. He would try to be postive and cheerful but one could tell that he was very unhappy. He didnt reallly talk when visited and it seemed as if he was just keeping everything inside. We know that nursing homes are the last resort when we can no longer take care of our loved ones. Seeing Dougie not interact with others, hear him say he didnt want to be a bother, and watching his health go down hill wasnt easy.
Where Dougie resides now is a small private home. Here he gets one on one attention and care. He particispates in activities, he smiles, laughs and jokes around. He has made another family connection wtih those who take care of him. Family and friends can come and go and participate in activities with him. It is as if Dougie has come out of his shell.
He is happy and he is more invlolved with life events on a daily basis. Things that he had no intrest in before he now enjoys. I am very happy to know such a special person as Dougie. He has the kindest of hearts and always sees the best for everyone, and always wants everyone else to be happy, loved, and have the best in life. Dougie deserves all of this and so much more. I am blessed to have him as my friend in life.
