Community is the core of my being and has been the catalyst for every development of life. I owe all that I am to those who I’ve shared any sort of moment with, be it laughter, a mistake, a lesson (exciting or painful), creation, mutual grief, discovery, a moment of peace, or a moment of struggle. Sharing space and time with one another is vital in maintaining an understanding of humanity. Movement (body language) is our most primal means of communication, and through moving together, we can transform- traverse closer to oneness. For this, dance and creation must and will remain the main pillars of my existence. I am Alejandro Perez, a first-generation Mexican-American raised in Los Angeles. I was lucky to have parents who allowed me to pursue my dreams - though the pursuing part would be done by me alone. I moved outside the boundaries of my comfort zone, leaping at every opportunity that presented itself, driven by the purity of sharing movement with others. Allowing the world to shape me, I moved between various environments and disciplines. Today, I am thrilled to create my first evening-length work. We are gathering as many movers from just as many backgrounds in order to foster a community built by unique experiences that interact, clash, and connect; birthing a single, collective identity. We will be researching causation, commonality, interconnectivity, and the intimacy, or lack thereof - between us in its duration. We need all of you. To produce this work, we are asking for $12,000 dollars. This money will go towards all of the local artists we are hiring: dancers, costume designers, musicians, and writers. Our goal for this performance is to provide a platform for creators in our community to expand their practice beyond this work. Your contributions will also allow our large group of artists to research and build in appropriate spaces. Any donations you are able to provide are deeply appreciated. This is a beautiful opportunity that can prove to be a pivotal step toward my pursuit of integrity for artists of the global majority.
