Help Scout Walk Again

Donation protected
Scout is a nine and a half year old German Shorthair Pointer/Lab that my best friend and her husband adopted from the Humane Society in our hometown when she was was 9 months old. Over the past nine years, she’s been on countless adventures with them: camping, hiking, swimming, you name it. She is such a wonderful, loving dog to their sweet family of four.

At the beginning of March 2021, Scout went on a hike with my best friend's husband and his brother. They stopped to explore an overlook and thought nothing of it since Scout has always been cautious of not getting too close to the edge; the guys welcomed her company due to the many hikes they have taken together in the past. Everyone was enjoying the view at the scenic overlook when Scout decided to jump from one rock to another. However, she did not realize that her landing spot was not flat like it looked but was instead angled down the steep cliff face. Because of the angle, she was unable to regain footing and tumbled roughly 70 feet below into very harsh terrain. The guys had to run to a safer side of the cliff to climb down to get to her, but they were luckily able to get to her side in a matter of minutes. She was miraculously able to walk to some degree, but she was very clearly hurt and was bleeding badly. The guys had to take turns carrying her up the mountain before rushing her to their vet, who was able to stabilize her enough to get her to the emergency vet.

From the fall, Scout sustained a stab wound in her hind quarters, a few fractures in her front right paw, and many scrapes and bruises. The vet was unsure if she would be able to walk again due to her injuries, which was a tough pill for them to swallow since she is such an integral part of their family. My best friend's two sons even call her Sister! Because of her injuries, Scout had to stay at the emergency vet for two nights and then they had to make the decision to bring her home to rehab her due to the high cost. Scout was unable to use her hind legs for four weeks, so they used a sling to help her get around.

She is now almost nine weeks out of the injury, and she is able to use her back legs (especially on the grass) thanks to their love and hard work! She is still having a hard time on smoother surfaces like hardwood floors, but she is continually proving the vet wrong by using her back legs and trying to walk. She is also seeing the vet weekly as well as now working with Physical Therapist to further assist in her walking again, so any additional funds above the needed $3,998 would be an incredible gift to their family as the costs of her care continue to mount. Scout is a true MIRACLE, and they are beyond thrilled to have more time with her. Thank you so much for the consideration during these tough times!

As a personal aside, there is no family more deserving of financial help. They are the most selfless people I know. They took in six month twins earlier this year with no financial backing from the state, so this has been a financially and emotionally taxing year for them as a family. As a result, I would love to give back!
