Help Support the Salmon Family as they navigate the unknown

As an extended family, it’s hard to fully express what this season has been like for us as a family but especially for Crystal, Michael, Lauren and Rachel. We have watched them walk through more than any one family should have to carry — and we are now asking our community to come alongside them with the love and support they so freely give to others.

A few years ago, Lauren began experiencing concerning symptoms. After countless appointments and tests, the family finally received an answer last August: Lauren has an exceptionally rare genetic mutation called Bag 3 P209L, with fewer than 30 known cases worldwide. This progressive condition is affecting her mobility, as well as her heart and lung function. There is currently no cure.

At just 18 years old, Lauren is facing challenges most of us cannot imagine. Stairs have become difficult, and everyday activities require increasing effort. The family has already begun modifying their home so she can continue living as independently as possible, knowing more changes will likely be needed in the years ahead. Even more concerning is the impact on her heart. Lauren has been diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy and, in April, she will undergo surgery to implant a defibrillator. A heart transplant may one day be part of her journey. Through it all, she continues to show incredible strength and grace.

Before the family had time to fully process Lauren’s diagnosis, they were dealt another devastating blow. Crystal was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her case has been complex, requiring major surgery in Victoria to remove the cancer. Her oncology team is still working carefully to define the disease and determine the best treatment plan to ensure she remains cancer-free.

Crystal is a devoted teacher at St. John Paul II Catholic School in Port Alberni, and her students and colleagues mean the world to her. Since mid-October 2025, she has been unable to work, and it is unclear when she will be able to return. As the primary income earner, her absence has created significant financial strain on top of the emotional and physical challenges the family is already navigating.

This is an extraordinary amount for one family to carry. And yet, they continue to meet each day with faith, courage, and deep love for one another.

We are asking our community to surround the Salmon family with generosity, compassion, and hope.

Funds raised will go directly toward:
  • Travel and medical expenses for both Lauren and Crystal
  • Potential travel to California (once Crystal is well enough) to consult with a specialized cardiology team experienced in cases like Lauren’s
  • Additional home modifications to ensure Lauren’s safety and accessibility
  • Any unexpected daily living expenses
  • Most importantly, giving this family the freedom to focus on one another — to rest, to heal, and to create meaningful memories without the constant weight of financial worry

Every donation, every share, and every prayer truly makes a difference.

Thank you for helping us show the Salmon family that they are not walking this road alone.

With love and gratitude,

Their Extended Family
