MMUN 2020 Fundraiser

Model United Nations, also known as MMUN, is an educational simulation of an academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MMUN involves and teaches participants speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. It is meant to engage students and allow them to develop deeper understanding into current world issues.

Participants in Model United Nations conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries to represent, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent.

As most of you know, Adelaide and Clinton attended the MMUN conference in New York City in 2018 and just completed the 2019 conference. I myself, chaperoning this years conference was able to see first hand how this experience has influenced so many students from around the world. Students from different nations around the world, working together to achieve the knowledge and understanding of real global issues. Also, to see the motivation develop in Adelaide and Clinton as well. Plus, they have had an experience that they will never forget.

The stories shared at this conference from young adults who have attended MMUN as children and have used the tools they learned to develop into outstanding adults was extremely inspiring. Hearing their stories of how they used the knowledge collected through this program to start movements of peace throughout the world was overwhelming. The MMUN experience opens doors to our youth that may have never been available before.

Although, this experience has been extremely beneficial for my children’s development, it has also been a huge financial burden on our family. With the exception of some fundraising in 2018, Beau and I  have solely supported their MMUN education. This year, without outside support Adelaide and Clinton will not be able to attend MMUN 2020.

This fundraiser in one of many plans we have to work hard to raise as much as we can as a family to achieve our goal of $10,000. We will be selling hot dogs at our local hardware store, planning special musical fundraisers and much more. My kids know what hard work is! They see how hard Beau and I work to give them every experience we can possibly provide. I believe this program will significantly help both of our children become more successful in their lives, to work towards a degree through college and follow their passions and dreams.
This program teaches our youth that they have the power to achieve more, the power to make a difference in this world in anyway possible.

Please help by donating anything possible for Adelaide and Clinton’s education through the MMUN program. If our goal is not reached by the end of November 2019, I will refund all donations. Thank you for your consideration and taking the time to watch and read our story.

Sincerely,

Melanie Burgess
