People Trapped Under Rubble Cry For Help!

Rescuers are now racing against the clock in harsh winter conditions Roads, infrastructure, hospitals, and buildings are damaged. You hear survivors trapped under the toppled buildings crying desperately for help.

Yet hopes of finding survivors alive in the rubble after more than two days in the freezing cold are dimmed.

The death toll has surpassed 15,000 and continues to rise by the hour and tens of thousands more are injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the southeastern Turkish city of Gaziantep at 4:17 am as people were sleeping, and 9 hours later another earthquake of 7.6 magnitudes hit the Elbistan region of Kahramanmaras province.

Since then there have been 317 aftershocks hampering the rescue efforts, (the strongest was 7.5 magnitude) further adding to the devastation. Many modern buildings have failed in a "pancake mode" of structural collapse. Approximately 200.000 people are estimated to be under the toppled buildings by now and only 8 thousand of them are rescued.

Survivors who have been forced to flee their homes are in the freezing cold with no shelter, no blankets, no water and no medical help desperately praying that rescuers will come and save their loved ones. Like this father holding the hand of his now-deceased daughter, not able to leave her frail body alone under the rubble.

As the North American Alevi Association we are receiving calls for immediate help and complaints; Alevi Bektashi institutions’ aid distribution efforts are blocked by local authorities.
