MLCS Journal Campaign

Maverick Landing Community Services (MLCS) is a small multi-service nonprofit organization in the heart of a mixed income housing development. We support families, youth, and adults build 21st-century skills through - collaboration, teamwork, creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving - to reach economic, educational, and personal goals. We center our communities needs through food & housing support, general resident services, and also offer a variety of youth programming based around STEAM/STEM education.

 

One of our proudest and most robust programs is our teen makerspace production workforce, where young people in our community learn how to use 3D printers, laser printers, and other cool equipment to design swag and products for our community. Most recently, we've been pushing a project that's been in the works since pre-Covid, that we're fully ready to launch this month! The product is a complete youth-designed journal, with locally sourced materials, made right here in our community center. The covers are sewn by a local woman's cooperative "Puntada", which means when someone purchases a journal, we can give them work, supporting an all around, local circular economy.

Puntada, who birthed from the Center for Cooperative Development and Solidarity (CCDS) during the pandemic, specializes in the craft of sewing, and they work on a variety of products from winter hats & mittens, to purses, jewelry, and more. They are a crucial part of this operation, as the sewn journal covers are what took us to a next level product!

 

 

The makerspace production program allows exploration for our young participants. We facilitate a space for them to explore what they are interested in, sparks new ways of being creative, and offer opportunities to become young leaders in the East Boston community.

 

This campaign will support the official launch of the journal hitting the market. Our goal is to raise awareness and create momentum around the program/product, build relationships with potential B2B & B2C customers, all while raising money to help keep our youth employed, hire more youth, and improve our all-around program capacity.
